Photo Contest Announced
Are there any rules, Mrs. Ed?
Yup. a few: http://davesgarden.com/contest/2008/
The rules:
1. No obvious photo enhancement allowed
2. Maximum of two photos per category per person
3. New photos only - don't enter photos that you entered in previous DG contests
On November 3rd, 2008, the entries will be closed and voting will begin. Voting will be handled by the membership at large, and how to do that will be explained when voting begins.
On November 17th, the voting will close and the winners will be announced!
Thanks for the heads up Mrs Ed. Wow, I would say your thread photo is a winner right there!! What a beautiful shot.
Thanks! Well, that picture just has a place in my heart because that's the bird I SO wanted to see, and it showed up for a week or so in May, right outside my window. I just about had a heart attack!
One more question...what are the categories?
click on that link, it tells you the categories.
Thanks, Mrs. Ed. I clicked on the link and found all the categories. All I can say is "I can't wait to enter!" It's more than just birds, too! I have several pics of flowers, bugs, and other nature-type photos. Do we have to be able to correctly ID any insect or animal that's in the pictures?
I don't think so. I know they want to add captions.
I love this pic Mrs. Ed...I think it is the best I have seen of this beautiful bird!! I hope you plan on entering it!!
I am! Just because I love him so much.
OK I nominate that picture to win!! You better enter it.
haha. THANKS! I am entering it, but let me tell you, there are way better pictures from this bird watching crew.
My pictures will not be of that caliber, Mrs. Ed, but I'm entering some anyway!
Maybe we should all enter some from the "your most disappointing picture" thread! That would be a hoot.
You be bad Mrs. Ed!! LOL
I'm not sure I like how they lumped wildlife and birds together in one category......
I've never liked that either. It did not used to be that way a while back.
Oh well, what can you do.
they should definitely be seperate catagories!
Hi all. Sooo glad so many will be sharing their luvly bird pics with the rest of us. Just a thought on the wildlife and birds catagory. It might be helpful to express that you'd like a separate catagory for birds on the thread for the photo contest. Some others have also expressed the same and I think if there are alot a requests it might be changed. Although they might want to keep it to just 14 catagories so all the winners can be in the calendar.
I did do that...I do recoginze it may not be do-able without the elimination of something else. AND I don't think that is gonna happen! Just one of life little frustrations but not a big thing.
ya I hear ya nanny_56. I soooo want a Dahlia catagory (big surprise LOL), never gonna happen.
I agree with y'all about the separate categories for birds and other animals. I think they should put 'containers' with 'tropicals and houseplants' and free up a category just for birds. People have taken so many great bird pictures that the other animals don't stand a chance! Maybe 'tropicals' should be its own category and 'houseplants, containers and misc.' should be the 14th category with a 'bird' category and one for other 'animals.' True, this is a gardening website, but often the purpose of gardening is to attract birds and animals right?
I bet that category is a holdover from before there was a bird forum and was lumped with wildlife.
Off topic, I got my free Wild Birds Unlimited calendar yesterday; we should make our own.
How did you get a free WBU calendar????
I dunno. I stopped in to buy some things and they gave me one. Must have been my charming personality. LOL
Well dang I was at mine today...guess I am just not as charming! LOL
Mine closed! I thought they all went out of business. I guess the local stores just didn't want me to return that squirrel buster feeder that was supposed to last a lifetime!
Hi. Me again. My Wild Bird Store doesn't give away FREE calendars :O :O I will have to have a chat. Actually they have a wonderful newsletter and give you a discount if you reuse your seed bags/jugs so I luv them anyways. BTW I'm looking for a product called 'Squirrel Begone' which is an powder you add to your bird feed to deter Damien the Spawn of Satan Tree Rat. My store says they can't find a distributor anymore. Has anyone seen this product?
you might want to try a squirrel repellent that is predator urine. I believe that's what squirrel b gone was.

It was a blend of dried pepper Mrs_Ed that I can't seem to duplicate on my own. Thanks for the link.
Ah well then maybe a cayenne mix of some sort. I know those are the two repellents.

Thanks MrsEd.
welcome. I think I'm going to buy some bulk cayenne this year, the strongest I can find!
Cayenne doesn't hold up for me, neither does blood meal which I buy in bulk when there is any moisture whatsoever. The 'Squirrel Begone' seemed to hold up better which is why I liked it.
grrrrr. I hate it when a good product goes away
Mrs_Ed, I just saw your posting of the red-breasted grosbeak and it makes me impatient for there arrival here. It will be a good reason for me to try out some fine binoculars a very kind lady sent me from DG's. The clarity and crispness are great. They appear to be very good quality ones. It's such good and kind deed such as this that makes me less cynical of poeple. This kind lady didn't know me fro Adam's housecat but she trusted me to send her a check to cover the shipping fees. As far as I'm concerned, she's a stand up lady.
Lee
That's a great story Lee!
I can't wait to hear when they have arrived. I really hope I get them back again this May.
Mrs_Ed, they arrive in the Spring, just as the dogwoods are leafing out. And in the Fall they arrive just prior to our first true cold front and stay around about a month. Wouldn't it be next to impossible to have to choose our favorite bird? I couldn't do it. I have some that interest me more than others such as the pileated woodpecker. They are all too amusing. Of cours, the flying jewels, the hummers are amongst my favorites. Really, I have too many to name.
Will run and cook some canned bisquits. and have some fig preserves with them.
Please keep us informed on your finds. Lee
