any tips for wintering?

chilliwack, BC(Zone 8b)

I have some huge plants about 10 feet tall by ten feet wide. I plan on cutting the tops off to root as large standards for next year but would like to leave the rootballs in the ground. Our winter lows can often reach about - 10C or about 14F, any suggestions of the best way to protect them.

Jim... Mother in zone7..gets hers to come back from the roots..she just cuts the plant off slightly above ground level...
Mulch or any covering above doing nothing..should only increase your chances..
leaving long limbs..and wrapping them in bubblewrap..perhaps with christmas lights or heat tape inside... might keep the entire plant viable for the spring..
