Hi, I would like some suggestions for a plant for a flower bed that is on a north-facing wall of my house. At this time of year, until the spring, the flower bed is in total shade. During the spring and summer it gets hot, bright sun for part of the day. Like, it could get *very* hot sun for several hours of the day. I love tropical-looking plants and would prefer a flowering plant.
I was thinking of an Australian tree fern (even though it does not flower) - I love the look of it, but they grow 20 feet high and this is next to my house so that isn't good. We had some bird of paradise plants there - I love their exotic look - but there is not enough sun for them.
So any suggestions are appreciated. As you can see I am in Zone 10b. Once in a while we'll have a frost on a winter night but that is very rare. We get those strong Santa Ana winds, too, but next to the house it has some protection and I could always get one of those bags if it needs it.
Thanks to all!
Suggestions for a nice tropical on a north-facing wall?
Oh, and I forgot to mention - we have a sprinkler system so the plant would get watered every day or almost every day. I can't change that as it is already set for the rest of the flower bed.
I think this is too shade for brugs...
Thank you, I will check them out!
Sorry I meant shad-Y! lol...by the way gingers are a great option for shade in our climate... indeed!
robcorreia - Do I have to wait until the spring to plant gingers?
Hi, I saw your dmail before the post! you got dmIL
I'm copying my dmAIL reply here so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong! : )
I *think* Brugs can take partial sun, so you might want to give them a try. Buy one plant, I hear that you can pretty much stick a pruning in the ground and it will take off here in Calif..
An Australian tree fern would probably be fine. first it would take a long time if it ever got 20 feet. second, it would arch out away from the wall/house. And also you could put other tropical under it's canopy. I have my Cyatheas in more sun. My Tasmanian and Fijian tree fern are against the north facing wall against my house and they love it.
