Hello everyone, I am subscribing for the second year now. It took a year of going to the internet cafe to make me buy my own computer. I have enjoyed reading and learning from all of the members. I live in an apartment without a garden, balcony or yard, so I won't have much to contribute. My dream is to eventually retire if possible with a place where I can do a bit of gardening. (That is some years from now). So with my furry one Torrie who is 9 years old, I will sit back and enjoy what comes across the laptop. It took me this long to introduce myself. I am always checking community forums for the pets and plants of all types, along with good food recipes which is one of my favorite things to do on the weekends. Hate to admit it, I live for the gardeners and pet owners stories and their interesting lives.
Hello from New York City
hello and welcome from upstate new york. it's a shame to enjoy gardening and not be ableto plant anything. well, thats life in the big city. the plus side is that you live in the most exciting city in the world.
hpe you check out all the forums including the recipe forum.
Welcome torriesmom. I've heard about community gardening in different places. Are there any near you so that you could play in the dirt? There are still a lot of forums that I haven't entered yet, just cuz there are so many. I've been chipping away at them though. I have thoroughly enjoyed my short time here on DG. There are so many knowledgeable people who are willing to share their expertise. Enjoy your time here.

I have tried a few plants in the apartment but of course it is not the same as gardening. In my area the community gardens appear to be semi private and locked to keep the flowers in and the neighbors out. when I pass by, the sign tells you when they are open but I never see anyone in the garden but the lady who did say that those were her plants. So I won't be playing in that dirt. I guess when my sister moves to Virginia in about 6 years, I will have a lot of dirt to plant in since she does not like gardening. It is easier for her to buy a large plant as she is very impatient. I on the other hand like to see seeds germinating. I can ooh and aah over a sprout. I do have a screwpine that is growing on the job that everyone admires and a tillandsia at home. Hopefully I can keep it (the airplant )from the cat. That is as much as I can do until Spring when I plan to order a Beefsteak Begonia plant which I remember as a child that was in my Grandmother's house in the 60's. Then I will have a garden.
Welcome to DG, Torriesmom.
There are forums here that cover anything you can imagine, as I am sure you've already discovered.
Look at it this way, by the time you are able to get out in your own garden, you will be an expert at all sorts of gardening just from reading the boards here at DG!
Thanks for the welcome NY, NJ and Fl. I was feeling timid and had to muster courage to even think of writing a few words. But I am more comfortable just reading what everyone does around the country, so you won't be hearing too much from me. This site is like a classroom and in order for me to learn things I will have to take notes and observe. I have learned so much in the past year that I am sorry DG was not around when I was younger and needed advice on taking care of my dear dog which was not supposed to be raised in an apartment. How I regret that. But my garden will have to be pretty large because I seem to like the rock gardens, the ponds with lilly pads, waterfalls, hanging gardens, herbs and flowers that that bring butterflies, and the beautiful pets. Add a couple of hives and I am on my way. (Don't mention the greenhouse). As you can see I have been all over. Kind of like taking a trip. So I will have a little experience when I am finished.
have you ever though if asking the building owner if you can put a few containers on the roof to grow some plants or veggies??
It is a prewar building that is not being taken care of properly. It is one of a few on my block that has not been either made into a condo or a co-op. I am trying to wait for the new changes and stay if they turn it over to a new landlord. The roof leaks and there are constant repairs made by unlicensed companies or people that the superintendent knows. According to my neighbors, you felt that someone will fall through when they are walking on it. The roof is out of the question. (It was nice to go on it in the 70,s and 80,s to watch the fireworks from the river). I can't put pots on the fire escape anymore because of the stray cats ( that are being neutered and returned) that will wind up outside of my window. They are so close that when I meowed a few different times to my cat, they answered me. I live on the second floor so I don't sing real loud anymore. It must of been awful for their ears. HaHa!
upstate new yori is real nice. LOL
I know that it is a different type of life. Not so hectic. It is 6:40 am, I am leaving the house to see another beautiful place. Going to Lancaster PA. for a day trip. So this is how I see the gardening and other ways of living. I get great ideas from my travels
PA ias nice also. enjoy your trip.
