How do Hoyas do under Grow Lights

Denver, CO

I need some input about the Grow Lights How well do they work? How long do you need to leave them on the plant, And can you grow Hoya's with just the Grow Lights and no sun light?
I live in Colorado and worry about the climate here and want to do as much as possible to help them grow well here.

Betty...I know that many growers and hobbyists use grow lights to supplement the lack of good light in the winter.... but I don't know much about it at all. I would take all the information you get here (I know there are different kinds of light - warm and cool - and opinions of how to use them)...and then make your mind up. You might also check with a hydroponic growing outfit near you... Wish I could help but I can't....:>)

Betty, Check out this link to a thread that I started on my experiences with growing Hoyas under lights:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/828578/.

I still have to say that there is nothing that beats real sunshine, but when you don't have enough, lights can help you get through the winter.

Ewelina (and I assume it is you because of the copyright watermark on the picture), when did you move from Canada? Welcome to the States.
Could you tell me which Hoya is pictured, please? Thanks.

Nice hoya Ewelina/Betty. I'm curious as to what it is as well.

I've seen your site before, and it says you've been collecting since 2005. But I could've sworn on a recent thread that you said you started collecting a year ago.

It looks like 'Mathilde'...

I agree with Christina that the plant in the picture looks like cv Mathide.

I just went to the hoyas.ca website and that is the picture that belongs to that website ... it's the same exact photo of Hoya cv 'Mathilde': listed under blooming hoyas: http://hoyas.ca/gal/hoya-cv-mathilde, but for some reason the link doesn't work and I can't get there again., might be something with my computer. H. cv 'Mathilde is a pretty little Hoya, I love the buds and opened blooms on that one.

I'm assuming betty_boop is new and doesn't realize you can't use someone else's photos without permission?

Since I consider Ewelina a friend, I'm sure hoping that's the case; Colorado's an awful long way to go from Canada for our Hoyas Anoymous meetings.....

LOL, I love it ... "Hoya's Anonymous" - there should be a group in every city!

Betty, all of my hoyas do very well under lights with no supplemental natural sunlight. I leave them on for 12-14 hours per day. Currently, I'm growing h. macgillyvrayi(sp?), h. shepherdii, h. nummalariodes(sp?), h. curtisii, and h. macrophylla var. I'd give it a go, I think you will be pleased.

First off I want to say I'm sorry about the picture when I was browsing I clicked on the wrong picture hope I have'nt offender anyone? (corrected picture)
And thank you for all your input very helpful.
Yes I have been in Hoya's for only 1 year buy I've had a Hoya noid for 30 yrs it was taken off a plant of my great grand mothers brought over from Finland with today the plant is over 100 yrs old and still blooming. But I thought that I was the only one that had one till a year ago on the internet I found over 300 types of them then I was hooked.
Thats were I found Carol Noel she has been a GOD SEND. She has more patience with me then I would have.
So far I Love this forum and looking forward to learning from all of you. My past experence with Hoya forums have not went well.
Once again so sorry about the picture.

Betty...it is either incurvula or brevialata...seems to me.

Denver, CO

Carol,
Are H. brevialata and H. incuvula one in the same?

Betty: Here's a photo Carol posted in Plant Files showing the difference in leaf size of the two:

Front side: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/91061/

Back side of leaves: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/91062/

The flower will tell the difference in the end.

Denver, CO

Thanks Guy's I believe mine maybe the bigger one? Like Carol said flowers will tell because it looks like the only difference that I can see is the size.

Thanks

Betty...there is a differnt shape to the base (bottom) of the leaf...where one is rounded and the other slopes down to the leaf stem.....
