I hope I'm posting on the right forum. I have a blood lily that is in dire need of division. But when I took it out of its pot, I found a gnarled mess of roots with no clear distinctions of where to divide. There are 3 large plants, one of which bloomed this year and several smaller offsets. Should I simply hack away, put the whole thing in a bigger pot, or is there a trick to this?
Thanks for any help.
blood lily question
When I work with a root-bound plant, I take the garden hose and spray all the soil off. If the roots are tightly wound around each other, I take a fork and rake down from the base of the plant. The roots will start to untangle. You will break a few, but that's not a problem. At some point you should be able to separate the plants. Then, just re-plant, water well, then don't water again until the top third of the soil is dry.
Let me know how it goes. Blood Lillies are not fond of having their roots messed with. I agree with Kay in her method...especially the don't water part.

Thank you both. This is most helpful. I'll give that a shot and let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
