Carolina Allspice vs. Michelia figo

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hello my fragrant friends. I have room for ONE, only one of the above shrubs and would like your opinion on which one is the most frag. It is important that it stays like a shurb, I don't want it turning into a tree. Will be planted inground. thanks for your help. On the Michelia figo, I don't know which cultivar it is, label just says M. figo, if that is makes a diff.

Hmmmm...clueless...hopefully someone else can be helpful

Sorry Nery, Chantell can't help you cuz her nose is broke!!! haha
(and I can't help you because I don't have either one...) but I'm watching as I wanted to know too! : )

:-)~~ Stickin' tongue out and blowing raspberries!!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

raspberries arriving...

surely SOMEBODY has had to face this issue. Don't make me buy both plants!!!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

hahhaha! I think that's our solution! You have to buy both plants and let us know!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well I certainly have the answer, M. Figo hands down! Sweet Shrubs never do much of anything for me, may bloom and smell like apples up close for a week if that--M. Figo even looks purdy when not in bloom!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

thanks violabird. M. Figo it shall be. Today I spent a good part of the day cleaning my plant ghetto and re-discovered a Jamaican allspice. I had forgotten about it. The JA is very fragrant. Now to decide where it shall go...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

"plant ghetto" ROTFLOL - I am SOOO stealing that phrase from you Nery!!! God know with teens - "ghetto" is s common word in our household any way - sad but true.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Nery, the Brug you sent me is ALREADY going to bloom!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! I'm so exciteeeed!!!
Yo Chantell, let me know when you're ready for my cuttings ok?!

(sorry, off-topic but I HAD to tell you how!!) : )

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OOOOhhhh forgot about that...send any time...just let me know how much for postage once mailed so I can send it to you ASAP....THANK YOU!!!!!! Been sick as a dog since coming back from FL and my brain's fried (and sense of smell IS broke currently)...ugh!! Done whining now...back to your regularly scheduled programing... ^_^

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

No need for that! I'll send it next week, I hope you can get your nose fixed! ; )

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Rob, that is great! I went to my friends house today and her salvia clevelandii was in full bloom and fragrance, ahhh

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm so curious about how the bloom will look like! I caaaaan't wait!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Welcome Mike to my favorite forum. I had mentioned you a while back when folks were asking about propogating the Banana Shrubs. Were you able to distinguish your two? I never got around to cuttings, tried to plant the Figo seeds with no success yet. Did manage to get 4 seedlings from my Peanut Butter Shrub (fingers crossed) so far.

All my time has been taken up with brugs!

If you put the peanut butter seed in good soil(out side), it will grow. Mine that fall to the ground sprout.
One of my shrubs smells like bubble gum, and the other smells like ripe nanners.Mike

My Carolina Allspice is along the front walk from my driveway, about 5 years old and only ?8' high, but the fragrance is great and the very unusual flowers are on it for at least a month or more (never paid attention, just always enjoy it). Plus the birds love it and also love the seed pods.

Sheri, is it in mostly sun?The ones I see can, and grow wild, and they are tall, and sparse.

It is on the NW side of property, but shaded by trees from a good bit of sun. It is sort of understory at the N edge of line of trees.

so.....what do gardeners do when they have no room for plants? THEY MAKE NEW BEDS!!!!

that is what I did. So I planted Carolina Jasmine and Jamaican Allspice in a new bed. When I went back to get the Michelie alba, it was gone, but now there's space for it when I find it again.

Jamaican allspice, pimenta diocea is absolutely wonderful. reminds me of bayrum and to me, it is like rosemary in that the frag. is released when you brush past it. I also made new room for sweet almond verbena in this bed and for roses (of course). I have a swing very near this area. Wonder if I will get a headache from all this aroma hitting me at the same time.

New beds OR ask neighbors if they mind something along the border between yards...ROTFLOL...I've yet to be told no...it's sad, what can I say.
Hi Mike!!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I bet your neighbors love it!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL either they love it or are afraid to say anything to the "mad" woman and her plants...oh the neighbors are two funny...I'm in a townhouse and the ones on either side couldn't care a less about plants...I'm sure I drive them nuts ^_^

Dahlonega, GA

No wonder you have to be so choosy about how much space you have to put stuff out . hugs , sally (the maid of orleans are growing like weeds ,both of them ,very healthy)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Sally so glad those MOO's are doing so well for you! After a jasmine filled summer I can say w/o hesitation that the NBJ and MOO's are my favorite jasmines for scent...hmmm, ok and the Grand Dukes. Course I won't probably have blooms on my Molle till next summer...I'll wait for final comment then...LOL Hmmm...forgot about that particular Orange Jasmine...ahhhhh never mind...love em all...back to your regularly scheduled programing ~ sorry, Nery you know how I can be!! LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

jasmines, carolina allspice, they all tie, lol

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

How long is the blooming season on that allspice, Nery? And what's the scent remind you of???

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I got the allspice this summer. It hasn't even bloomed for me yet. also it's a small plant. if you're talking about the jamaican allspice, it's new too and I don't know about the flowers, but the leaves themselves release frag. when crushed.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Well let us know....when you get blooms...just curious to know what they smell like and how long they stay in bloom (the Carolina). Hoping all my "shrubs" planted will produce heaven-like scents come spring time..whaa hooo. Got that daphne...mock orange...hmmm what else...the Mohawk Viburnum...yikes...I'm not sure what those other two are in the back yard....mercy...
