We rescued a Plott Hound two and a half years ago and it ends up she is a snake dog. This is copperhead bite #8. She has never been bitten behind the acres of fence we put up to contain her in the country. Rather, she has been bitten EIGHT times by copperheads at our house in the middle of the city. Thank goodness we are a bit north for rattle snakes. DH caught her with the copperhead flailing around in her mouth and gave her the "drop it"/"come" command. Since snakes start ranging near sunset, our vet's office is has always closed fifteen minutes before having to take her to the emergency vet facility. That's rather expensive. So, our vet just got around to telling us the approprate dose of Benadryl and Rimadyl, (which we already have in the house for another one of our dogs) with instructions to bring her in for evaluation and antibiotics in the morning. The antibiotics are really important, I know, but could we have not been educated about this before the thousands of dollars spent at the emergency vet? I am a surgical R.N. and not totally incompetent here. Drat!!!
