Medical Treatment for Separation Anxiety?

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

We adopted a stray dog this past Spring and instantly fell in love with him. He's great company for our other dog and is a joy to be around. The problem is that he has a serious case of separation anxiety. When we leave home he panics and either digs out or climbs over the fence. When we first got him I thought it was due to being a stray and roaming on his own for so long, but after researching the subject realized he has classic separation anxiety.

This article does a good job of describing the condition and the medical/behavioral modification treatment available. Woody whines when we leave, displays excessive greeting behavior, wants to be around us all the time, and possibly hypersalivates. I called our vet and he does prescribe these meds. We have an appointment tomorrow morning. Has anyone treated their pet with these meds? What was your experience?

If the treatment is not successful, we will have to find another home for Woody. It breaks my heart to even think of giving him up.
