With that eye stripe, I'd call it an American Tree Sparrow. Not certain, though.

Claypa, let me see if I have another picture that might show the breast better since the tree sparrow is supposed to have a dark spot.

Here's one taken just a bit ago.

Okay, I'll change my mind, Chipping Sparrow. I always try to get clues from their calls, and Chipping sparrow is an easy one to hear - is it still around?

I dont' think this is a chipping sparrow either, because it is bigger and the head is not solid chestnut.

To clarify that the picture above is of a chipping sparrow.

and… I don't see it right now, but a few times this morning.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

First-winter White-crowned Sparrow.

Note the strong pale central crown stripe; American Tree doesn't have that, and Chipping only has a weak, narrow one. Also the pale bill with just a bit of darker on the upper mandible: Chipping has a blackish bill, and AT has a solidly dark upper mandible.

Wow. I thought for sure Field sparrow. Though I did see that the imm. WC looked similar.Okay. not a new bird for me then.

I wondered about White-crowned too, but I've only seen them in early summer up north. Neat.

I saw a mature one in the country the other day and I had not seen one since May. I should have known they were back around.
