Non Chemical/cheap soil drench

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 6b)

Does anyone know of an inexpensive/organic soil drench to treat the potted brugs I am bringing in. I can't find Bayer systemic around here not. Shipping is too expensive.

Will mixing Ortho systemic with some proportion of water work? I just don't want too many bugs in the house this year.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Isn't the bayer and ortho systemic the same?? I would think so... I also drenched them with Bayer 12-month Tree & Shrub insect control about a month ago, hoping I won't get aphids this winter.. did you try a nursery for the Bayer? Might be a little more expensive, but not as much as having it shipped..

I am not sure AuntB. No nurseries up here have anything left. It is too cool. I should have thought about this 2 months ago.

Well, darn it.. Maybe go online and try to compare the Ortho & Bayer label? .... they don't realize people like us grow tropicals and use that stuff more than just spring/summer...

I have just read the above messages and learned about treating Brugs in pots with a Bayer or Ortho soil drench. Although I do not worry about my Brugs in the ground over winter, I have a couple in pots that I do bring in to my glass enclosed porch over the winter. Is this the same thing that is used for treating roses? The 3 in one chemical? I have some left over from when I used to have roses----and would like to use it. Do you know if it will help with spider mites?

Hi Shirley, I use the granular 2and1 (or 3 and 1 when I can find it) and yes it says for roses on the jug. I've used it on the brugs and tropical hibiscus periodically through the year for many years and this year I added the tree and shrub to my regimen.. I'm not sure if the rose care is specifically for mites (I'm at work so I can't look at the label) but the only problem I had last winter with them growing in the basement was aphids, which is what I used the tree and shrub stuff for a few weeks ago.. I guess I'm trying not to say "I don't have a problem with spider mites" cause I might jinx myself... whether it's my regimen or luck... I'm not sure. I hope this helps..

Paul.. oh..take the afternoon off and come by for a visit... there's a pile of systemic things about here... garden centers.. Lowes.. homedepot...still in good supply...but you know it will end..come winter... and take home a plant or two... in the time you look in a few places there... you could be here... Gordon
