Datura or Brug??

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi there,

I know my tree is an Angel Trumpet and that is all I know...it is roughly 6 feet high and I have it in about a 12-14 inch pot and put it out on my deck every summer and then bring it back in before any frost comes. Well for 2 years in a row after it has been in for a while it starts gradually dropping all its leaves...one at a time.

Can anyone help please? Thanks,

Joanne

Joanne, whenever there is a drastic change in environment, a plant reacts by losing leaves, sometimes it drops all of them. As it acclimates to it's new environment, it should put out new leaves. Do you let it go dormant all winter by keeping it in a cool dark place? Or do you keep it in a warm sunny location? Care of you Brug is different for each overwintering method.

Hi there,

Gosh I sure don't check the forum often do I? Thank you for responding. No I keep it going all winter and it did this same thing last fall so I brought it in sooner this year but I put it back out in the spring and it is so beautiful when it fills in again...it probably is not enough light because this year I have it by a 3 tier lightstand and there are two branches and the one branch that is closest to the lights is fairing far better.

Unless you have those expensive grow lights, light is going to be an issue. Use fluorescent lights instead of incandescent because of the heat the latter produce. A double bulb bank will work, but a bank of four is better. The bulbs need to be 1" - 2" from the top most leaves and should be left on for about 16 hours to provide the light requirement. Give the Brug 1/4 or 1/2 strength fertilizer every other time you water it. That will help the Brug send out new growth.

Thanks so much Betty.....I have it in behind a three tier light stand but it is definitely not getting enough light....if I turn on any more lights in this house my hubby is going to throw me out and my plants with me....LOL!!!

There are a bunch of different fluoresce bulbs . Try to use different ones - IE a daylight , warm white , cool white .
Some times a bulb will look like it has waves in it .
You can stop it by flipping end to end- one end on floor then other several times .
I store the bulbs standing on end - which can cause it . I think the waves or pulses help the plants but I really don't know .
I put aluminum foil under pots - It reflects some of the light back up under leaves I think it helps the plants but I really don't know .

With enough Florescent lights -- my brugs growing under my basement continue to bloom all through winter.

Joanne, by using different florescent bulbs as tontjr advised, you increase the width of the light spectrum available to the plants.

well I will see how I can manoeuvre that.....I would love to see some blooms on it....they are a drop dead gorgeous pink and HUGE!!!!

Thanks for all the tips....really appreciate it.
