1. If I buy seeds from namrd crosses of pink brugs...will I get a pnk brug for
sure.
2. Do brug seeds need bottom heat to germinate.
I received seeds in a trade labeled pink but one grew whitishand the second's hasn't opened its blossoms yet. One plant grew about 6 ft tall till it got blossoms..the other about 4 ft. The tall one has had or has 14 blossoms on it.
The shorter has nine....and I have read that open crosses do produce white NOIDS.,,(read this since planting them.)
(I'm proud of them anyway....as I finall grew them after trying for 2 years.
3, Did I do an ok job...should I keep them?
Here is a pic of my first flower
Brug seed questions
1) The answer to your first question is NO, not for certain. However, thanks to all the work that has been done by some fine hybridizers, your chances of having a pink Brug are pretty good. Much better than they were many years ago. White appears to be the dominant color.
2) From what I have read in old threads, again the answer is no. Seeds seem to do better without it.
You mention the size difference between your two plants. Even though the seeds may have come from the same pod, each is a distinct and unique plant and can vary greatly from one another.
3) You did a fantastic job! How long did it take to get them from the seedling stage to the blooming stage? I would keep them especially if they are your first and only Brugs. There's a lot you can learn about Brugs through these two, including the proper way to collect pollen, how to pollinate the flowers (the fun things), how to ID Brug problems (the not so fun, but neccessary, things), etc
Welcome to Brug mania. Once bitten, there's no turning back. You'll need lots of space to overwinter your Brugs in the future.
A photo of a Mountain Magic bloom from last fall. The color was actually darker than it appears in the photo. Something happened on the way to Dave's.

Yes congratulations gammy3 ...you grew out your plants from seed ...wasn't it fun? ...now you can make your own seeds ...your white angel is unique because everyone grown from seed is. Yours have pink genes in them even though they are white ...if you can afford to go buy a nice pink Angel and you can cross yours back to that one ...that will you a reasonable chance of some pink babies.Whatever happens here you are now with two plants to practice on ...to make lots of cuttings from and therefore lots of plants to plant around your garden ...what is wrong with white Angels anyway? I love them ...I hope they smell delicious for you.
They are special because they are your first home grown babies ...well done!
Some of my favorite Brugs are white.
ok, here is the stupid question of the day. Won't the bees pollinate? Why does one have to pollinate their plant? I grew a white brug from seed and it has bloomed and all I did was water and fertilize it. I'm new to brugs and have so much to learn. ok, you can laugh now.
Moths are the Brug pollinators — that's why they are fragrant at night. First of all you have to have at least two different Brugs to get pollination. They have to bloom at the same time to get the moths to do it. That is if there are sphinx moths around to do it. Too many ifs. So collecting pollen from one to use to pollinate the other when it blooms is the only way to do it. The other reason is that you can control the cross of named Brugs. I wouldn't have laughed if you hadn't given me permission to do so. LOL!
So if I want fragrance I have to use the qtip method of cross pollinating? .....Laughter is good for the soul.
Most Brugs are very fragrant, but usually at night when moths are out. There is at least one thread that has pictorial directions on how to pollinate. When I find it, I'll post a link, but a small artist paint brush is used not a Q-tip.:-)
thank goodness I have tons of moths... those blooms are lovely, I can't wait to see my firt bud bloom outback.. I am so kacited..
I will check out the links this afternoon as I have to care for my grandbaby. I know we have huge moths at night (everything is big in Texas). Well, I don't have any blooms yet as lil Miss Gargantuan hasn't even y'd yet. So It will be a project for next year.
Thanks for the links. I'm so kacited too. :)
