It's a tomato hornworm, Manduca quinquemaculata, and turns into a sphinx moth.

They can do a lot of damage to tomatoes and its relatives, but if you a plant to spare, sphinx moth are the giants of the moth world. I've seen a different type of sphinx moth feeding on the nectar from my Brugmansia blooms. Some are about the size of and sound like a hummingbird.

I love the sphinx moths jodester! I am all for bettydee's planting to spare. What plant is it crawling on there?

They are nocturnal pollinators... and very much like little hummingbirds.

Do you think that might be what I saw one night about 2 a.m. on my Rose of Sharon? It was at least as big as a hummer. I only saw it through the window and didn't get a closeup look, but couldn't imagine what it was that time of night.

I've got a couple of caterpillars on my Arizona Ash. Maybe Tobacco Hornworm, but I can't find anything saying they use that kind of tree. They are welcome to eat all they want of that tree!
