Cottage Garden Trellis Designs II

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/844786/#new

Share your ideas for climbers: the plants and what type of structures you have, or dream of, for them to grow on.

Since there is over 2,000 views, I thought it was time for a new thread :)

I didn't take this photo, it is one of my favorites. I would love a pergola like this some day.

Okay - I just gotta say from the last thread - the bathtub idea was great, but I don't think I'd care for *all* of the fixtures of a bathroom on my front lawn!

Wind -- back on the 20th of May, you posted this == http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4977492

the TeePee one. That is exactly what i wanted to do for Morning Glory support. I thought that would look so beautiful... but I too am not creative. But it's cool to see it in someones yard.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm with you, Pagancat. I told him that I thought he had it just right this way.

Of course, he has five acres and a lot of room, so maybe with a small corner bathroom, he might be able to carry it off.

LOL - true, Katie. I was actually imagining a window suspended in air with curtains that would blow in the breeze, a little chair that had a small-leaved vine wound around it ... but I stopped at the WC!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I, too, like the lavatory part best of all - maybe with a mirror (or just a frame) suspended above it.

But I can do without the toilet. That's just one of those everyday devices I'd rather not celebrate with art. LOL

Wind, I just got back from Longwood Garden, and I think the teepee you showed is ipomea (cypress vine). It had a gazillion red flowers on it and the humming birds were diving it and the other garden flowers. The Idea Garden had pumpkins and squashes arrayed beautifully, many of them I'd never seen or heard of--and me without my camera, which I never took out of my suitcase. Wish I could go back today. The whole thing was exquisite. Pam

oh wow...did you hear that tcs?

...another vine idea for the teepee. I love morning glories but at this time of the season the common ones usually look extremely weedy.

Pam, I had to go back in the posts and see what the teepee looked like ~ the plants were too small to tell in my photo. From your description it does sound like the cypress vines. I think there were at least three teepees, weren't there? The hummers must have been in hummer heaven!

I would love to get back there soon too :)

Yes, Diana, there were three teepees and I was suprised at the height of them. The cypress vines were somewhat open looking at this point, but still plenty of flowers on them, and if you saw another of my posts, they had numerous black pearl pepper plants (that someone just ID'd for me) all around the exterior of the garden. I'd never seen those before and it was a spectacular sight with the red cypress and the candy apple and black pearls all over the purple/black foliage. I was mesmerized. DH and I are going to try the arrangement next year on a smaller scale. I'll bet the deer won't mess with 'em. The little buggers are really hot.

Hi Pam, I couldn't find the post you are referring to about the black pearl peppers. I've never tried black pearl, but did try an ornamental pepper this season from Critter: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/85169 and really loved it.

What is the candy apple you are mentioning?

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

Wind, Sorry, I missed your reply earllier. The candy apple is the color that the black pearl peppers get when they mature. The newer peppers are almost black and as they mature they get that color like a fancy shiny red car or candy apple. Both immature and mature peppers are on the plant at the same time, so there is wonderful contrast. I haven't seen a picture online that captures the depth of color of both the foliage and the peppers themselves. I wonder if Jill has grown them. Pam

I can't remember if there was a trellis, but, something has to be holding up that Wisteria.

Mmm mmm - great pics, as always, Dale.

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

Ooooh Dale, lovely. I doubt I'll ever get back to England or to Paris, but seeing your pictures makes me nostalgic. The Seine..the Seine...when will I again meet her there, greet her there on the moonlit banks of the Seine...

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Now, those are sure trellis' on a grand scale :)

Somehow, way back when, when I visited London and Paris - I missed all those beautiful garden spots. I do have a vivid memory of market carts full of beautiful cut flowers for sale.

Pam, I doubt I'll ever get back either...

wind -- some how, this fell out of my 'thread watch'

back to those "peppers", i just got some seeds and i'll be WSing them this year. I'd like to try that TeePee thing with MG's or even cypress Vine, and i can put the peppers at the base.
