Interesting, !!!!! Very pretty shrub, Can I send you a SASBE ?

Thanks, Sharon

That was quick! I just posted it....

Please know that this Shrub grows only from seed and it takes 7 years before it will bloom.
It flowers in late February/early march and is extremely fragrant. Sweet aroma....hence the name.

I have directions somewhere on how to treat the seed before planting (from Terry). Probably be good to have that....

Still interested?

Do you know how this would do in my zone? 5a in Iowa? I would love some seeds, instructions would be wonderful!

I'm interested, how much postage do I need to send? And,I'm a little dense sometimes, do I send you the bubble envie and you reuse it to send the seeds back, is that how it works?

Plant Files has this hardy to zone 6a.

Lets anyone interested in the Wintersweet seeds, or any others--contact me by D-mail so we can "do business" there....Also--if you are not in the Address Exchange--send me your address via the D-mails.
Sometimes I also might want to send you additional photos of the plant.

I will accept SASBE from all of you. I find that to be the easiest way. Besides--those envelopes are not cheap and I would have to add extra to cover them. OK with everyone?
Gita

PS If you go to PF to look up the Wintersweet--I have many of my I pictures there I posted of this shrub. Now I have to find the directions......

edited to change to my preference for SASBE's.....

FOUND IT!!!!!
Now--anyone asking for the Wintersweet Shrub seeds--PLEASE copy and print this out!
All the seeds I am offering are from Spring--2008. You will receive a good amount of these seeds.

"Best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame. Pre-soak stored seed in tepid water for two hours, keep warm and moist for 3 days then chill for 5 - 8 weeks and sow in a cold frame. Germination is usually good, though it is often slow and erratic, and takes place in 2 months or more at 13°c. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts"

The seeds are still in the refrigerator (Hopefully they'll hold until this winter.) Unfortunately, this winter found me focused on my DG work instead of winter-sowing ;o)

Hi,
If you have enough I would love to have a few to try. Very interesting shrub. I just joined Dave's late spring and have just started saving seeds. I am 58 and this is one thing I have never done! Thru this site I am taking a crash course in "how-to's" lol.
The only flowers I have are, mixed touch-me-nots, purple 4'oclocks, will have yellow edible nasturtiums in a couple weeks and a large red zinnia. Vegetables I have a few heirloom tomatoes. Hopefully I will have more next year. Just getting into growing flowers. Several died because of the extreme heat this year.
I will send a sasbe if you have enough but can't get it out until Tues.
Thanks, Cindy

Hi all--again.....

Earlier this Summer--I found a seedling of the Wintersweet Shrub growing under my Shrub. First time I have seen one!!!! Yeah!!!! I know many seeds fall down from the pods I fail to harvest, but I have never seen one sprout.

I carefully dug it up and potted it in a square, quart pot and will let it grow. I will, probably, bury the pot in a bed to give it the most advantage of the protection soil provides during the Winter.

Anyway---for all of you that have asked me for the seeds to this fragrant Shrub--I wanted you to see what the seedling leaves would look like. Seems there are more than one seed sprouting in this pot. maybe a whole pod fell and is germinating. They contain anywhere from 2-6 seeds each.

The round leaves at the bottom are the cotyledon (sp) of the seeds. The sharp pointed leaves are the true leaves. I am glad I had a "sharp eye"--as there were many other weeds in the bed and I was in a weeding mode. I ran my fingers over the small, true leaves, and I knew it was a W-Sweet seedling--as it's leaves feel rough and sandpapery to the touch.

Hope this helps you ID your seedlings when they sprout.

BTW--I have zillions of more seeds to share. Please do not hesitate to ask me......
You will receive at least 40 seeds when I send them to you.

Hi Gitagal, I nicked the seeds(5), left them in water (and a few drops of peroxide )for two weeks, then sowed them with a 1/4 inch soil, and had one germinating the next week. I thought this could help. André

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Andre,

Thanks for sharing that. Soaking for 2 weeks? WOW! Post a picture when it starts growing, will you?

I might have some sprouting in my bed next year. I know many seeds fell on their own while i was gathering them.

Gita

I will try to post a picture tomorrow. It is about two inches tall right now. André
