Has anyone changed their dog/cat diets from kibble to BARF/RPM diets?
After much research I just converted my Komondor to a raw food diet, she has severe GI reactions to corn and corn products, as well as sensitivities to grains. The two best kibbles I had her on were Blue Buffalo and Innova, but she still had some GI problems with those. They were costing me roughly $50-65 every 3 weeks. I will be converting my Pug next. Our cat is already on a cooked only diet, as any form of dry kibble food, or wet cat food leads to disastrous GI explosions.
For the most part the diet that I follow is found on this link: http://www.healinghope.net/downloads/canine_raw_food_diet_basics.pdf
I do make some minor changes. I personally feel that if Theta (my Kom) eats the same thing repeatedly over and over and over, she simply stops eating it. With this diet I can mix it up, virtually on a weekly basis. I am going into the end of the first week of the conversion of this diet. I fasted her for 24 hours, then introduced ground turkey, with carrot and pumpkin. Then the next day started with a chicken back (most area butchers offer these for relatively cheap...I ordered a 40lb box at 49 cents a lb.), I also gave her a chicken leg, carrots, 3 chicken livers, and a little bit of pumpkin. The next two days I changed it around a bit. The only thing that I've noticed, and after reading through the different websites on this vary subject I was forewarned, is that she is drinking less than normal. Her doggie business is a little different also. So far, knock on wood, there has been no GI upset noticed. And within the 3rd day of her on this diet, so actually 4 days including the one full day of fasting, her obsessive scratching has almost completely stopped! Since I've had her, I purchased her when she was 3 months old, she is now almost 5years old, she was never a dog that would eat all of her food at one time...she grazed on it all day long...now, she is done with her food in a little under 10 minutes!!! To the timid, this does sound gross, and if dogs chewing and crunching on bones, or ripping meat apart bothers you, I would NOT recommend this diet. I'm just happy that she's eating, not scratching so much, and appears "happier." All of this and it hasn't even been a full week!
I was wondering if any of you feed your furkids this type of diet, and what your reaction is to it. Thank you for any responses!
