Question about computer protection

I guess this is several questions- about virus and malware protection. I have used AVG for years, but since version 8 was released I have not used it, for several reasons. I had the cooperate version of Norton on my PC, but today it stopped working and I can't get it to run. I have XP Home on my computer with SP2 (I will not install SP3) What I am asking is whether the Windows Defender is sufficient to protect me? I could install Avast, I guess, but if Defender will work I don't need overkill.
