I didn't think twice about these photos of what I thought were just mourning doves until I uploaded them. They were taken in August. The one that has me confused is the one on the back of the feeder looking toward the camera. It has a white patch on the shoulder. None of my bird books or pictures of the mourning doves on the web show a white patch like that on a mourning dove. I looked at all the other kinds of doves for my area, but nothing I've seen has a white patch like this. the closest is a white winged dove, which are in my area, but the white lining starts lower on the wing. Any thoughts?
CLOSED: Dove confusion
It's another Mourning Dove, with one of its 'inside' feathers (normally hidden) got stuck out on top of the wing. It just needs to preen a bit to get it smoothed back into place ;-)
White-winged Dove is distinctly larger (but shorter-tailed), and has a red, not black, iris in the eye.
