Passion Flower in Cleveland Ohio? How can it be?

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

My wonderful husband came home today with some seeds he collected from his grandmother - in Cleveland. We're in Columbus and I've always drooled over passion flowers from afar thinking it's way too cold up here for them. She has it in the ground beside her house and has had for years now. It comes back every year. She's not just in Cleveland, but in Lorain a few blocks from the lake. He tried to bring an actual flower for me to see because he thought they were beautiful but after the two hour drive - it is kind of wilty. I was absolutely shocked to see it, wilted and all. I just needed to share my shock....how can a passion vine grow in Cleveland? LOL

Hello cheles;,,

I live just a few miles west of Lorain in Huron County.. I have them growing here also.. It's a pretty hardy variety that comes back every year with new growth from the ground...A real fast grower with beautiful lavender blue looking blooms... This hardy variety is more commonly known as a Maypop I believe...

Hi Dave - Logic would say that I could grow these down in Columbus then as well. If I wait until Spring, will these grow from a cutting off Grandma's plant? Or should I just start them from seed? I was just shocked to find them this far north. A wonderful surprise!

Yes,,,,Rooting cuttings from Grandma's plant will work just fine....

Sorry for the delay in responding to this thread... I forgot all about it... I guess by now you must have them rooted and growing down there...

Thanks Dave! I've actually moved to Oklahoma this past year. Having to start the garden all over....very fun!

Just be careful, becuase these will come up across the yard from where you plant them. They travel underground, heck under CONCRETE by the roots. I have had them come up 25 feet from where I planted them the year before.

You should be able to get some volunteers from your grandmother. They come up pretty easy and are easier and quicker to grow than cuttings.
