Is my Chantecler a roo?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I got this chantecler a few weeks ago. It was supposed to be a pullet. Is it a roo?

Suspect Reason #1. Very big chicken. Big legs. Tall. BIG.

Suspect Reason #2. Attitude oozes out of this chicken....

Suspect reason #3. Neck feathers.

Ummm...did I mention BIG!

Oh yes, suspect reason #4. Pointy feathers just ahead of where tail comes out. Very pointy. Roo looking feathers if you ask me...

Any consensus?

Not familiar with the breed I raise Cochins and Brahmas, I am looking at him/her thinking Roo. Just becouse of the regal look and upright stance. Definitley just an uneducated guess.
Someone will come along soon with more knwledge of this particular breed. Definitely curiouse.

The knobbles on the back-inside of his legs look like incipient spurs to me.

I Have NO Idea

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm....it isn't looking good. Maybe I can make some interesting new crosses with him.

Clarkson, KY

OF COURSE!! Cross him to the barred hens and to the ameraucana/ araucana whichever!! BBEBH!!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Breed him to the barred hen/ameraucana offspring? Or to the female barred rocks and female ameraucanas?

What roo do I need again for the official BBEBH program? (besides the chantecler, now?)

BTW, Chanteclers lay large, light brown eggs.

Dighton, MA

I have had that mistake before!

Black Araucana or Brown depending on which team you want on. I was thinking the eggs were almost white. That's current BBEBH. I was thinking it would be educational to see what he produced crossed with females of both. The patterning w/ the BRs and the eggs/ colors w/ the AM/ARs. Doesn't he have buff dilutions??^~^

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

uhhhhh...i dunno.....

I guess I'm gonna have to get another roo at the RU to participate, since I don't have a brown or black araucana roo....

(Zone 7b)

Grow you still talkin about that roo LOL

Clarkson, KY

I haven't stopped!! How you missed it all this time.....blatherblatherblather......lol

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Claire at the moment it doesn't look like a roo to me. Maybe it hasn't developed all the gender characteristics of that breed but Ideal describes them as "They have very small cushion combs that are set firm and low on the fore part of the head" and "Their appearance is very strong and stable with clean legs."

http://www.mypetchicken.com/Chantecler-B27.aspx My pet chicken shows a pullet with a head like yours. They're also described as chunky.

I think you've just got a very big gal on your hands!

One of my Welsummers was HUGE and had sickle feathers--and was a pullet. The Welsummers are BIG girls and compared to other breeds you tend to want to think they are roos. Maybe it is the same with Chantecleers. Also my dominant Delaware pullet acted very rooish in that she was very upright and assertive.

I just caught him crowing. He proceeded to do it repeatedly for about 10 minutes. I am figuring it's a he.

(stomps foot in annoyance)

No eggs from that one!

Lodi, United States

Who did you get him from?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

An Iowa member of BYC who also brought me 3 serama girls (and they all lay eggs so they are females!). She came into town for a dog show and brought them all in for me. I might ask her if she has any more that are females that she wants to sell so at least I could have a pair.

Okay--sounds like "ignorance of the facts" as opposed to "got a roo to get rid of--one way or other". I keep hearing about being careful 'cause people will unload old, sick or inappropriate birds on guiless newcomers.

But roos are so hard to spot--I tend to go too far the other way and declare everything a roo til proven otherwise....ask tf and her two CA "roos" who are now laying eggs.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I thought the mention of the spur buds on his legs were the clencher.. Well, at least now the mystery is solved.

Catscan, I sure hope one of the CA roos you gave me lays an egg! LOL 2 are crowing.. one still looks exactly the same as the day it got here. Wouldn't that be awesome if he lays an egg! ?? LOL

Clarkson, KY

Mine crow every time a hen lays an egg, does that count? they are so proud!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

If I ever get an egg.. I bet I will crow too!!! LOL

Lodi, United States

That's great to hear, ZZ! Sure you don't want a nice little Marans and some Barnevelder roos?

Anyone out there want one? They are gorgeous.

A couple of my pullets had pretty big nub spurs...and some had sickle feathers before the juvenile molt--but this is CA and we may have a cultural bias toward playing with gender.

(Zone 7b)

Some game hens have spurs i know i use to have one.

About the people unloading chickens yes it happens all the time i get customers who come to me wanting to replace birds that died or are just too old too even lay an egg and some want hens to go with ever how many roo's they got talked into that they were told were hens.
It's a shame these people who will do this and know exactly what their doing when they take advantage of others. I avoid free chickens because you never know what your getting or getting stuck with.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

You didn't get those placed yet Catscan?

Tell me more about that marans roo..... you have my attention... LOL Hurry.. you know that is short lived.. LOL

He settled that one.
Handsome fellow, yes try and get some hens for him.
Wish I could try a couple more breeds, I always see somthing I like when we show. There are so many beautiful birds out there.
Yes Get More!

Lodi, United States

I'll send a picture of my Marans boy--he is a beauty. Can't from work--but I will this evening. Hold onto your attention--I put my boot heel back on with superglue in Ohio--you could try that.

Foley, MO

I'd say most of my hens have little spur knobs. I don't think that's a very accurate way of sexing.

Clarkson, KY

?! I don't think mine do, but it's entirely possible I've missed it for the last 2 years. All too.
