DD's laptop won't turn on

she's got a 3 l/2 year old sony vio (spelling) works fine never had a minute's trouble with it, never replaced the battery, but she plugs it in and it's plugged in now and won't turn on from the little turn on button, with or with out it being plugged in.

Problem just arose last night, she uses it for term papers mostly. doesn't get used near as much as my laptop , no internet usage, and she hasn't spilled anything on it.

not sure what other info to provide here,

I may have to take it to my computer guy I guess.
