i keep reading about putting bulbs, etc in mesh bags with peat moss to store indoors over the winter months. What are these mesh bags made from? Do they sell them? Can I make them? What material would i use?
Then i read that some things should be stored in a box with sand. What type of sand?
I sure would appreciate someone helping me out here.
I have:
acadanthera bulbs
gladiolas
cannas'
those big red & green leaves I think it has Florida in the name of them
and a few other assorted small bulbs.
thank you

The bags are the ones like onions, potatoes or oranges come in.
I've used them for years.
Dig them, cut off the foilage and let them dry for a few days.
Place them in the bags and place in a COOL place. The ideal temp is 45-50 degrees. I dont have a place that cool so I use the coolest part of my basement.
I've tried the sand and peat moss both and the bags work just as well
thanks paul, my dh works at a grocery store and is going to get me some. :-) perfect.

In my previous home, I use to dig out the cannas (leaving about 6 inches of stem), leave a bit of soil over the roots (I never washed them off), and just put the whole lot into a plastic trashcan (no lid) and store it in an unheated cellar area. The cannas actually would start growing in the trashcan in the spring.

I'm in zone 8. I know that I have to dig up my caladium, but can I leave my cannas in my pots? They are "patio cannas" meaning they'll live - and they do - nicely in pots. They are in my screened in porch and look great. Anyway, do I need to let the first frost get them, then dig 'em up?
So much to remember...so few brain cells left....
