Night Blooming Cereus....Seriously!

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I have two blooms on my cereus plant tonight. The first time it bloomed we had a party and sat on the porch and watched it open. I wish the blooms would last more than just a few hours, but they're worth it.
Last year I had one bloom and I sat there for hours watching it. A luna moth came to visit it, but wouldn't stay for a photo.

It's been a great year for the cereus, I still have 4 buds left to open.

WHOOOAAA! I didn't know that such a plant existed in northern Michigan. It's so tropical. Can you tell me something about this plant?

It's a member of the Christmas cactus family. The grow in New
Mexico and south. My boss at the flower shop gave me a cutting when I left rode island 15 years ago. I never bloomed for the first to years. I have taken cuttings off of it and started new ones that are also blooming. If someone whated to try it , I might be able to send them a leaf.

It loves to spend the summer outdoors, even in Michigan! It get's so happy that it blooms. I think it likes brightly lit neglect in winter. (I got lots of neglect) The blooms are sweetly scented and about as big across as your hand. They are beautiful! I've seen them bloom indors in the winter, but have no idea how in the heck they do it.

Those are really beautiful. Thanks for posting.

I have never seen anything like that. Your story reminded me of the older movie "Dennis the Mennice" Where Mr. Wison waits years for this plant to bloom at night and has his garden club there for the blooming.

I just have to add my two cents on this one.
I had one for years. I would put it outside and in the summer it would be loaded with blooms. They smell so good too. In fact I gave my girlfriend a cutting at least five years ago. Well she got her first bloom this year also.
I got my cutting from a co worker at a greenhouse I worked at in 1976. She had a plant and Ednia and her two irish sisters would have a party every year when it was blooming. Brought back such good memories for me.

I am so excited for you

The last blooms on both lants opened last week. I moved both the big ones and the baby I just started for a friend inside for the winter. It gets harder and harder each year to find a place to put such big plants.
