I got my first Egg from my Americauna hen today. A lovely shade of olive green if I do say so myself. And my Jersey Giant left me a double yolker to go with it. The Jersey Giant only started laying about 2 weeks ago, but she has given me eggs for the last 8 days straight. What a girl! I'm so proud of all of them all. The picture is of the green egg, the double yolker from the Jersey Giant with a normal one for comparison, and an egg from Shnitzel the Marans.
My First Green Egg! And a brown double yolker too!
Wow Myrrh! Such a beautiful assortment of eggs! I am so envious of your maran egg. I never get any that color. The double yolker is HUGE! More akin to an emu egg!! The green one is quite delightful. I would like to blow out the insides of them and start to make an egg wreath!
Thanks so much CMoxon. Perhaps you could talk to your local chicken fairy representative about a Marans? I am a little overwhelmed by my sudden egg wealth. I am definately a chicken convert.
There are some marans roos at my local shelter but if I adopted one, I am not allowed to use it to breed, per standard shelter agreements. So that would be sort of pointless because it won't lay eggs! I thought I might find a marans at the Missouri Chickenstock thing. I hope so anyway! I would also consider one of those dark egg penedesenca layers.
That seems pointless. Seems like it would be hard enough to place a rooster without adding silly agreements. Wel, hopefully the CF will bring you a nice Marans hen.
Probably a blanket rule meant to cover everything from cats to horses to llamas. Not thinking what it takes to breed a chicken in the first place.
I also have some cuckoo marans and americaunas but they have yet to lay. Can you tell me at what age they start laying? My girls are 17 weeks old.
I can hardly wait as well till they lay. I have 3 muscovy ducks (all females) and they lay alot and those eggs make the BEST omelettes I have ever had :-)
My Americauna is 23 weeks old, and my Marans was about 18 weeks old when she started laying (give or take a couple of weeks for the Marans). My Jersey Giant and Americauna are both from the same hatches as those of a friend of mine though, and neither of his have started laying so I guess it is highly variable. I know the feeling of egg expectation. I still have a Blue Andalusian who hasn't started, and I am awaiting the first white arrival with breathless expectation.
Mine are twenty two weeks old and no eggs yet
one hen sings a lot lately
