Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

That is cute...I am gonna have to get some whole peanuts.

I remeber earlier this year when I finally started to get the eyes on my birds to show up more. Now I am noticing the breathing holes on top of their beaks. Anbody else do that?? LOL

Adel, your little sparrow is so cute!!

I think I spotted my first one this morning, but not sure because it was up at the tippy top of the tree. So my pic is not that good!! lol

Nanny, you were asking if anyone was noticing the breathing holes on birds. Well, this Turkey Vulture was showing off for us one day and I happened to take a closer look at it's face and noticed it's holes. Hard to see, but the hole goes straight through to the other side!

They're not the cutest bird around, but they sure do a wonderful job of cleaning up our roadkills.

Cool vulture head!
I love those goldfinches and sparrows too!

My heart is just racing from all the hawk activity this morning. I was walking from my office to the kitchen for more coffee when this one swooped low over the yard and feeder and landed in my neighbor's tree. I only got one picture before he seemed to swoop down into one of my neighbor's backyards. I didn't see him again, but wait until you see what I saw while I was waiting.

This is the yard swooper which I assumed was a redtailed hawk, but I'm not very good at hawk ID. I super cropped it, so hope it looks OK.

While I was watching my neighbor's backyard to see if the hawk would reappear, a flock of hawks swirled overhead. I have no idea what kind they are. They were very high up and seemed to have a stripe on the tail.

I think I just did the wrong picture. I think this one may be easier to ID if you can see it at all. I'm not crazy -- these are hawks right?

One more hawk. This is from yesterday. He was right above my head eating baby squirrels out of a nest that survived the storm, but was now totally exposed since the top of the tree is now gone. I bet this hawk is eating better than it ever has in its life.

Broad-winged Hawk. A long-distance migrant, goes to South America for the winter. The ones with the obvious band on the tail are adults, those without are immatures.

Elphaba, I am so jealous, seriously... Went hawk watching (which involves an hour drive and steep 30-min walk) for five days from Sept 13-21 in hopes of seeing Broad-wings... but nothing (or just a very few, no big kettles, they were there but we just couldn't see them). Aren't they an amazing sight to see above your head?

I must now hope to catch them during their spring migration!!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow, now I realize how lucky I was to see them at all! They were amazing to watch. I couldn't believe they were hawks. I got one picture when they were almost gone where I got most of them in the picture. It was difficult to count them but I think there were close to 100 of them.

I hope you see them in the spring!
