Micro Mini Sinningia's
Hello mrsbonnie,
Do you have any of the star eyes left.? I would love to pay postage for it.Thanks Jan
Oooh, I would love one too! Will gladly pay packing and shipping charges for one of those cuties!
jannich and plantladylin.................I am going to show you some pictures of the minis I started from the tubers that Bonnie and I got from Gary Mikita...........I don't know how big they need to be before they are shipped. I really don't want to grow them...........let me show you some of them........how tiny they are........
phone rang..........be back with pictures.....
Gail, aren't they just the cutest things? My micro mini S. pusilla and rio das pedras go to seed I guess in the containers they are planted in because I always see little babies popping up.
Gail, you could sell them on the MarketPlace. I think Rain sold a micro mini on there a couple of weeks ago. But, I have no idea how to pack and ship them either. I did a trade with Susan51 last spring and sent her a micro mini pusilla all planted in the jar but didn't pack it well enough I guess cause it was all dumped upside down and soil was everywhere and she couldn't find the plant in the soil. I think she tried smoothing the soil out but I forgot to ask her if it ever re-sprouted.
I got a micro mini in trade from (I think) Cedarnest and it was packed so well. It was in a little pot with LFS around the plant on top of the soil and I think paper towels taped over that. I really need to take some lessons from some of y'all who pack so well. I always think I will remember but never do. Maybe the next time I get packages in the mail I will take pictures for my files so I can refer back to them when I need to pack something! LOL.
I will need some instructions for sure with these...............
Hi Gail;
you have to cut the top off like you would any other sinn.to seperate them.or take them out of the soil *& look for tubers,i ship them out of the pot in a plastic bag that after i put it in the bag i staple it all around so it does not move.they ship very nicely that way.Jan, i mailed out your bright eyes yesterday & plant lady, i will send you one.
bonnie
Gail, if you feel around very gently with your fingers, you'll feel the little tubers. About the size of a green pea, maybe a bit smaller, maybe a bit bigger. You can carefully separate them that way.
I ship them with the foliage still on them. Depending on how bit it is, I either ship in a baggie of vermiculite, or in a Dixie cup.
The method for the Dixie cup is to wet some long fiber sphagnum moss and squeeze out every bit of water you can, so it's just barely damp. Put a thick layer (about 1/3 of the cup, depending on how tall the foliage is) of loosely packed sphag in the bottom and make a little well, or cup, in the middle of the sphag with your finger about as deep as is needed for the tuber to sit down in it and the foliage to rest on top of the sphag around the outer edges. Then make a little pad of sphag to lay on top of the foliage, thick enough to fill the rest of the cup. I rubber band a coffee filter over the top of the cup to hold everything in place and put it in a ziploc baggie. Everyone who has gotten a micro Sinn shipped in that fashion from me has said they were very happy and even that the flowers and/or buds were completely unharmed.
You have to be really careful not to have the sphag too wet, though. Squeeze the daylights out of it to be sure all the water is out. I shipped a micro Sinn that was way too wet to someone not too long ago, and she said she was so scared to get it out of the sphag she could hardly breathe out of fear it had rotted!
Aha, I bet it was Rain that I received one from too ... I remember that packing method and it worked really well!
Bonnie: I sure look forward to "Star Eyes" ... love that name! If you can d-mail me with your paypal and tell me what I owe for postage I will get it to you this evening when my DH gets home. He's the one with a paypal account, I have no clue how that works, so I always have him remit payments for me through his paypal.
OK.........thanks for all the help.........Rain and Bonnie.........
Lin and Jan...........am typing up my to do list now..........will add your names..........but it will be next week..............thanks everyone.........you don't need to send postage as it won't be much.
Gail, Gail, Gail ... I owe you so much already! I want to reimburse you for packing and shipping, it's the least I can do. With all the trading and giving away that your generous heart does, those shipping costs add up. I know it may only add up to a few bucks some times but hey, a dollar here, a dollar there ... that could go into your "plant money jar" for future purchases! You know you could be selling these on the MarketPlace and making money!
Let's face it Lin!!! We all get a joyous feeling when we give. You are worse than I am and that is the best part of life....................I still haven't forgotten your esperanzas........I saw some the other day at a Whataburger Hamburger place and I didn't have my camera with me. They were literally trees and covered in blooms.............When I send your esperanzas you can pay the shipping on those.........
Oh Gail, I thought I told you, I found the Yellow Esperanza's! One of our Wal-Mart Garden Centers has bunches of the yellow ones and I bought a couple more about 3 weeks ago. I thought I told you, but knowing me and how scatterbrained I've been lately, I probably didn't. If you ever find any of the Orange ones I would love you to pick up a couple of them for me ... I think it would be really beautiful to have them planted together, yellow, orange, yellow, orange ... all the way along my fence!
I hope if I've forgotten anything lately, if I owe anyone anything ... please let me know ... a lot going on lately with family stuff and I am so unorganized. Now, I've got an eye infection in my left eye (the one I wear a contact lens in) and I can't drive without my lens ... Arrrgh! Very frustrating! I did drive myself to the doctors yesterday and they gave me a prescription for some eye drops. They put something in my eye that they said made it "glow" bright yellow under the light they used and found no scratches or foreign objects in my eye. They didn't want me to put my lens back in but I couldn't reach anyone for a ride home so drove anyway. It was less than a mile and I was fine, removed the lens as soon as I got home and when my husband got done teaching his last class he picked up the RX for me. I need to find out if I can wear my lens while using these RX drops. I can't imagine not being able to drive for 5 days while using these things but I do want my eye to clear up. I'm past due for an eye exam too so need to get in to see the eye doc.
Anyhow, please let me know if I've forgotten to send something out that I've promised anyone.
The mico's are too cute!
Thanks for sharing and shipping the bright eyes so fast Bonnie. Will you d-mail me how to do the paypal thing please.
Thanks Gail!
Lin, I am so sorry about your eyes............getting older with our aches and pains can be a pain but at least we can laugh about some of these problems! glad you told me about finding the yellow esperanzas and will look for the orange ones........
Gail, you are so sweet. Yes, if you see any of the orange ones, I would love a couple ... but, please don't go out of your way ... if you come across them in your travels, pick me up a couple and I will reimburse you for the cost plus packing and shipping!
This eye thing is frustrating but I feel very fortunate because the only medication I take is Advil for the occasional headache or arthritis! I have a friend a couple of years younger than me and she is on all kinds of meds for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. I count my blessings!
I don't have high blood pressure and lots of other things, but I would be embarrassed for you to see my bag of pills I carry around...............hope it means I will live longer but the side affects of so many meds just have to shorten someone's life I would think............
