Here's some pics of a Red-tailed Hawk in the top of a tree located just beyond my property.
I would have loved to be closer but I was afraid of scaring him away.
I love these raptors.
Red-tailed Hawk
Very cool, pelle! By the time I get my camera when I see one, he is long gone! GM
pelletory, congrats. on the pic. i, too, love the raptors. lee
Me GM...mine just zip thru, grab a bite and are gone!! lol
Thanks guys. They don't do it that much for me either, especially since the 3 huge Cotton trees were taken down.
Great pics Pelle.....was he keeping an eye on your birdfeeders?
No I don't think so. :-)
might someone tell me how to i.d. a redtail from a harris' when i only get a fleeting glace? they are often seen near the mourning doves. i seldomly get a chance to get the binoculars(as poor quality as they are) before they have caught a dove and are gone. lee
Great photos of the Red-tailed Hawk ...........
Fabulous!!!
Those are great photos. We've been seeing one fly by our house every day, but it doesn't sit in the trees because of our resident Crows chasing them off. Just as well because I don't want a hawk attacking my smaller birds.
The Red-tailed usually go after squirrels here and the Coopers and Sharp-shinned Hawks go after the feeder birds.
Thanks for the nice comments.

Quick simple answer - you won't get Harris's Hawk outside of southern Texas across to southernmost California, apart from the occasional falconer's bird escaping. In TX etc., look for Harris's Hawk's white base and extreme tip to the tail, and otherwise largely black plumage with dark red-brown shoulders.

resin, thanks but i often see a hawk with it's back towards me. it is a blue/gray color and stalks the doves that gather beneath the feeders. lee
Blue-grey on the back, and hunting doves, sounds very like Cooper's Hawk to me. Sharp-shinned also fits on colours, but tends to go for smaller prey - it'd be a brave Sharp-shin to tackle a dove.
Resin
yes, i tend to agree with cooper's. just couldn't think. thank you, lee
