I just bought one from a local nursery and it's technically hardy where I am (z 9a). The temps here don't get below 20F, but stay there longer than your typical zone 9.
I'm toying with the idea of planting one of the stems (there are three) in the ground on the South side of my house. Spider plants and boston ferns overwinter there just fine.
Thanks!
Barb
Anyone growing Metalic Palm (Chamaedorea metallica)?
i would try it, but just dont get too attached to it... i think i hear palmbob say that those are very finicky
Isn't Palmbob in CA? Their growing conditions are sooooooo different.
What does Tony Avant say????
yeah, you are right. i forgot that detail. lol maybe the floridians will have something to say about that

I think Toney is in Argentina right now.
Does he have them to sell? Never seen any palms there but I did give him some Mexican Fan seeds.
Lavina
"Hardy Palms for the Southeast" lists a couple of chamaedorias but the metallica is not listed.
speaking of chamaedoreas, i've been meaning to get my hands on some C.radicalis http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/63269/
and C. micrspadix

they have some radicalis growing at the zoo in columbia. and a brahea armata aka blue mexican hesper palm. i have too seedlings of this palm. they are more suited to desert climates, but i figured it was worth the try in the drier areas of the yard

Wow, C. micrspadix looks like it could fill up my whole front yard!
The mexican hesper palm is gorgeous. I love the color.
Barb
i meant to typ "micro"spadix LOL. yeah i just hope the mexican one can survive here
I have seeds for the Mexican fan if you need them. So far they are doing good here. They are just slow growers.
Lavina
are you talking about braheas or washingtonias?
Washintonias.
Lavina
i have found washingtonias to be one of the fastest growing palms that we can grow
I didn't plant the palm yet, but am planning on separating it into two pots. One I'm going to bring in; the other, keep on the south or east side of the house and only cover when it gets below freezing.
I'll let y'all know how it goes!
I did look up metallic palm on Tony Avant's site and didn't see it.
