I just went through my second long electrical outage of my adult life--the first one was in December a couple years ago, and I lost almost every single tropical and house plant that I owned---five days below freezing with no electricity.
This year, at least it was warm, but very dark. I went from having light stands to "dark, moist I'm afraid of fungus and rot" stands. I moved my plants outside, I fortunately have a shady porch.
I'm soo buying a generator! I worry about the plants, the animals, and let's not even discuss how gross the refrigerator and freezer were. Ugh!
My husband finds it amusing that in the face of a storm that blew off pieces of roof and siding and tree, I was worried about my house plants. Priorities. LOL
What to do for plants in emergencies??
Celene, So sorry about the electrical outage! I know "Ike" traveled up through Ohio and onward to other states and caused a lot of problems too!
Since I live in a part of the country affected by Hurricanes every season, I understand about not having electricity! We never owned a generator until 2004 when we had 4 Hurricanes come through our area within a 5 week period! We were fortunate that we lost power for only a week but it was miserable! We had temp's in the mid 90's and very humidity. It was awfully uncomfortable without the use of AC, or even fans! Now we have 2 generators! and my husband laughs because we haven't had to use them! That's okay with me though ... he can start them up every once in awhile like he needs to, to keep them in good operational order. We had to board up once this year because of the threat of a hurricane but so far we've been very fortunate this season! I can't imagine living in an area that gets real cold winters and losing power .... not having electricity or heat! I wouldn't be able to take the cold ... I'd have to go to a motel in a situation like that!
I hope you plants survive. That was a good idea moving them outside to the shady porch. But, in winter with below freezing temperatures, I guess there's not very much you can do.
Yes .... Priorities ... with me, it would be kids, pets, plants and then whatever else! LOL.
