no copper in phone line

I was wondering since I couldn't get a straight answer from the phone company if anyone here might be able to help.

I have been trying to get DSL. After a few phone calls I get the answer that I don't have a copper line. They won't tell me if they would need to replace the line or what would need to happen.

My phone company sublets service from Verizon. If I switch to verizone phone service directly do you think they would change the line if that's what needed.
