I was wondering if any of you in zone 7b have grown these and how they did for you. I'm tring to decide what I'm buying from Plant Delights Open House tomorrow and I've always wanted to try these two. I have had a vole problem the last couple of years and always worry that I'm adding something tasty for them. They usually do the most damage during the winter months.

Agapanthus and Alstroemeria
hey chamthy!!
I have several of both, and they're both really hardy for me, haven't had any problems with voles, either.
I would suggest trying agapanthus 'Back in Black' & 'Stevie's Wonder'....so I can live vicariously thru you..lol! aggies are awesome and you can find alstroemerias other places and spend your PDN budget wisely:) I have several agapanthus and alstroemeria I can bring to the next RU....'Glory of the Andes' alstroemeria has been most rewarding, but I have plenty to share of that one!
Bless you girl! I was thinking I'd try 'Stevie's Wonder' this time. I was also going to get Gladiolus 'Cruentus' since I've wanted the real thing forever. That only leaves enough on the GC for one more...
oh gosh, don't get me started...lol...it's so hard to narrow down a list to go there
have fun!!!
Chamthy: I have agapanthus that have been tremendously hardy here. I can't' recall the variety, tho. It's a tall one, the flower stems are about 36" and it's deep blue.
I had two "Back in Black" from PDN that I planted two years ago. Sadly, I didn't have the good luck with them that
Tropicanna has. One died, the other has foliage about 6" tall and always seems on the brink of death. Can't figure it out, because
I've heard nothing but good comments on it. Tropicanna: what conditions do you have for yours? I'd like to save the one i have left.
Deb
chamthy...so...what'd ya get? :)
Deb, I don't have back in black, that's why I was joking about living vicariously through her, but I would imagine the care woulld be the same as for other aggies, full blazing sun, neglect, barely water and occasionally some bone meal...
the ones I have that haven't bloomed don't get enough sun and get too much water, but they're still very much alive until I move them next year...how are yours sited?
Tropicanna: Full sun most of the day, pretty well drained, acid soil. The ones that are doing so well are in the same bed as the Back in Black. Maybe I've over-watered. During the drought last year, I got in a habit of doing alot of watering. Maybe I drowned them. :(
I'll try a bit of fertilizing, and back off on the water - specially since autumn's coming.
Thanks. Deb
do you have a picture?....gosh the catalog pics of that one are so pretty
that's a really nice deep blue!!!
I'm back- I did buy 'Stevie's Wonder'. The 'Back in Black' foliage on the ones for sale was puny compared to the rest of the varieties. I definitely wouldn't have picked those plants out of the lineup.
Tropicanna- I'm glad to hear your success story with them. I can definitely provide full sun and dry:) I did get the gladiolus- it was a leap of faith since it's dormant now. My third choice was Zephyranthes 'Confection' because the pots were so full of bulbs that it was bulging and I love rainlilies!
sweet...I can hear "I was made to love her" in the background....
if your zephs set any seed, plant them fast! I hve some citrina and habranthus robustus babies already
