Hummers & Flowers!
Very nice pics nannny!
Real nice nanny! I wish I could get just one pic of a hummer on a flower!!! GM
Love those Torch lilies...tried to grow them years ago but failed. You always want what you can't have.
Love your Anna taking a bath shot! I have never tried torch lilies....
Nanny, they're easy maintenance with just a small amount of water, but take up some room as they get larger.
I may have to check them out.. pretty and the hummers like them!
nanny, lucky you, having the pleasure of these beautiful little birds at your place. I love the way their tiny little feet hang when theyr'e feeding.
ducbucin, what lovely shots. The one of the Anna's having a bath on a couple of leaves is gorgeous.
ducbucln - glad to see your Red Hot Poker pics. I planted one in spring, '07; it
didn't bloom till this year. The blooms were more peach/cream than the orange/
yellow on the plant tag pic, but still pretty. Several folks said they didn't think
hummers liked the pokers. Your pics say otherwise, at least for the West Coast.
Here's hoping it's true for the rubythroats back east here!
Do your pokers re-bloom (mine had 2 blooms several wks after the last ones)?
And do you know if any varieties reseed?
Carol,
Mine do have a few straglers as far as blooms, but have been in the yard several years now. They're perrenials here, but they do turn brown toward the bottom of the plant very late in winter. We get down to the 20's but only get an inch or two of snow, so I don't know how they'll do there. (I've always heard they don't like sitting in too much water)
I didn't know how to collect the seeds until my blooms were gone, but it's pretty easy if you don't want the birds to eat them. Our Orioles just love the seeds so we've always just left the blooms for them.
ducbucln - Lucky you on having orioles. We get them in Maryland, but unfortunate-
ly, the only ones in my neighborhood (smack in the middle of the 'burbs) are the
ones I watch on TV (my Baltimore Orioles baseball team)!
Nanny, great shots!! I love that color of Salvia. I just have the red and just had to move it away from the chain link fence because the neighor's cat kept visiting and trying to catch my hummers while they were gathering the nectar. Now my dogs will be able to protect the birds as they dislike cats.
