Things to know before you buy or breed

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Ok your have done your research and know all about the breed that you want. Now where to buy one. Pet store???? NO WAY!! you say you do not want a puppy mill dog. A family that breed their dog??? Well I have news for you many of the people who only have 1 or 2 dogs can also be called a puppy mill. A puppy mill is any one who raised dogs for the MONEY ALONE!!!!
A good breeder very rarely makes money on their puppies most I know of are lucky to brake even. The mother must be fed high quality food from all her live and when she is pregnant and after the puppies are born she must have the best food and all she can eat. And the food for the puppies. Then there are the vet bills. Then there are the hours caring for the puppies, they pee and poop alot. Also the hours spent handling and playing with the puppies. Now if you have a male that won at Westminster Dog Show you may make money.

He/she has papers. I really love that one. I have news for you that piece of paper may not be worth anything. All it says is that the puppy MAY BE PURE BREED OR MAY HAVE THE PARENTS LISTED ON THE PAPER>MAY!!!!! I have been out of the loop for a time, I know that the AKC has been trying to fix this problem but it is hard. Some "breeder" report that they have X number of puppies when they only have Y number of puppies. There by having left over registration papers. A Honest breeder will destroy the extra ones but some will use them for lesser breed puppies or sell them to others. We had a case here in Jax where there was a pet store/breeder selling puppies that had false regkstration.

Ok so the puppy is the right on one that piece of paper.
HE/SHE IS OF CHAMPION STOCK
First how far back?
Also just because the parents are champions does not mean the puppies will become champions. Say a breeder has a litter of 10 puppies they are lucky if 1 puppy is show quality.

And it is a sad fact that a lot of dogs that get their titles are not worth of it.
There is a lot of underhanded things going on. Take the Dobe you could have the most purfect one every born but it you do not have a top notch professional handler you will not get that title,in other words the handler is being judges not the dog. And some judges out there do not know the breeds they are judging. I know for a fact that one of the top judges out there would not know A Bel Terv for a pug. And I have worked with a few that could not see a foot in front of their face. There was also the case a number of years ago when a owner was paying the judges for wins. That was one case where heads rolled. For many years everyone know what dog would win at the Westminster dog show even before the judging.

One last fact. Some owners of the stud dog do not tell others of problems in the blood lines of their males. My last Terv was a case in point of what could happen. His grand sire was one of the top producing sire around at the time. He sire many champions BUT he also passed on a number of defects, many of which did not appear until the second generation. It took my breeder many years to get these problem out of her dogs. And a dog that was worth over 500.00 if he could have been show was only 150.00 as a pet.

I hope this can help. The old saying is "Buyer beware" and that goes for pure breed puppies. Please check out the breeders as well as the breed and do not breed unless you can improve the breed.

Sandy and Andre the demon child whoes only flu is a little to much white on this chest and who is fixed!!!!!!!
