Scion wood wanted this winter

Anna, IL

Anyone have any apple or plum scion wood available this winter? I will buy or trade. I want to try my hand at grafting next spring. Have never done it but it looks simple enough a dummy like me could do it

imred, I would offer you some of mine but I think we are too far apart for it to remain viable during shipment. I have never tried grafting with scion wood over two days old and then it was kept in a sealed and refrigerated plastic bag with a damp paper towel.

I will watch this post and if you don't get a closer response and want to try I would be willing to give you a short list of what I would have available. You would have to specify size and how you want it packed for shipping. I like mine about 3/16-1/4" for whip grafting. You may want it smaller for budgrafting or whatever you have in mind. Lots of different ways to graft.

I just tried grafting for the first time this past spring and SUPRISE, all 3 of my attempts are doing fine!

I don't think I would have any plum scion wood to trade, but would like to see more scion trades going on here..

I do have lots and lots of Prunus americana.. Tart wild plums , but they might make good root stock.?. That is what I have to graft onto..

Anyone, while on the subject of scionwood, I am looking for someone with a Australian Finger Lime who is willing to trade, give or sell some scionwood. I have a healthy root stock about 3" in diameter, growing in the ground, just waiting to be cut off for some budgrafting. I could use it for about any citrus but my heart is set on adding Finger Lime to my citrus collection.

I think I want to do cleft and whip grafting next spring. I have about 30 plum trees and about 20 apples and am running out of room. I would like to double the varieties if possible. I am looking for both Asian and European plums and would like antique apple varieties. I will get a list of my varieties posted and any special wants I have. Dave has plant and seed swapping. I think we shoud get a scion wood swap going.

Imred.. I will be looking for your scion wood swap.. Not sure I will have any of your wants, but maybe someone.

Looks like I will have Shiro, Santa Rosa & Stark's Delicious Asian plums. Fuji, Transparent, Lodi, Braeburn, Gold. Delicious, Gala, Thompkins King, Winter Banana and maybe some Spitzenberg apples.Stanley & Fellenberg European plum. I might have a couple of Victoria and Imperial Epineuse European plum also. I'm looking for other Asian and European plums and other heirloom apples. Especially Ashmead Kernel, any Cox or Cox cross Grimes Golden, any good russet or sweet crabapple.

I have a green gage plum tree and a Wickson Crabapple. But I don't know a thing about scionwood. I would give you some pieces of my trees, but how long and how do I ship them so they work? This is a first for me. The crabapple is an heirloom from Etter and is rare. But it is a crab apple. I also have a transcendent crab apple. Yummy to eat. If you want scion wood from me you will have to tell me what to do to get it for you. But I am willing.

Thank you for the offer. I would very much like to have scionwood from all 3. In fact green gage and Wickson crab are both on my most wanted list. What I will need is twigs of this years growth(which you are probably going to prune anyway) which has 4 or more buds. They should probably be about the diameter of a pencil. You should cut them when they are dormant. That would be Jan. or early Feb. here. Then just slip them in a plastic bag and mail them to me. I would happily pay for Priority mail. Also do I have any you might be interested in?
Thanks again

I will be happy to give you whatever I have. Undoubtedly I will have plenty of the Plum and the Transcendent. I pruned the Wickson over the summer so am less sure about it but I will check. I am happy to do this, but do remind me. I doubt if I will remember it otherwise! I guess I won't accept your kind offer of scion stock, because I don't know how to graft and am pretty much out of space for more trees, unfortunately. But I will happily share what I have with you.

pajaritomt, I know I would love a little bit of each of yours.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

KathyJo, if there is enough I will send you some, but my trees are still quite young. So first I will send some to Imred and will send the rest to you. I have no clue how much it takes to graft. Perhaps you can dmail me with what you think is a reasonable amount of scionwood.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

If you don't have enough that is absolutely fine..

Does it get cold (below freezing) in you area? I think that if the tree the scion is taken from is dormant and they are sealed in ziplock bags they will stay viable. I would pay for Priority mail if you sent some. What species and varities do you have?
Thanks and God Bless

I would like 3 or 4 sticks of your Grimes Golden if you care to send them to me. I have Braeburn, Golden, Thompkins King, Gala, and Transparent if you would be interested in any of mine.
