Hi,
I am new to this forum and i just have to say that I love all the photos. The people here are sooo cool...
I have a question regarding what to do with my containers during winter.
I have seen lots of photos of container gardens lately.(I am getting some gardening magazines as I am in the process of designing my garden). I am planning on using lots of containers in my garden next year.
I already have some plants that will need to spend winter indoors (GA) so i would love to get some ideas. I don't have a greenhouse but I have a basement.
How do you overwinter things like begonias and the like indoors? Do you use lights? Do you use shelves?
thank you:o)
container gardens and winter
yes, use grow lights made for plants. I buy mine from Walmart.
You can buy a 4 foot shop ($15 average)light and buy the grow light bulb separate.($6)
It will take several. IF they look leggie after a while, you may have to find some 4 foot grow lights in a gardening catalog with higher watts.
Hang the lights 6 to 8 inches above the plants.-------which works well on shelves.
Another thing you can do for the winter is grow herbs, since you have to have the lights for other plants anyway: chives, rosemary, basil, greenonion, thyme, etc........ You can even grow a bush cherry tomato plant.

Personally I recommend cheaper bulbs since most folks don't find the grow lights worth the extra money (you can buy middle of the road bulbs for around $2 if you buy in bulk (10 pack) but maybe the prices have gone up since last year) and cheap fixtures if you can find them (I paid $7 at one Home Depot but cannot find the same fixture at another Home Depot) but make sure you get one with a 6 foot cord.
Hi Cricket and Butch,
thank you very much for all the info.
I have lights for my streps but I didn't know if they are used for bigger plants.
I just have to go out and get more of them.:o)
Thank you everyone,
Butch I love your photos!
