I know it's a bit late .. but I finally built an ant moat that works. You'll need a plastic cap from an aerosol can, the ones that have the little moat inside it, a cork, 6 - 7 inch piece of wire (coat hanger wire is perfect), glue (I think some silicone caulk will probably work better) and a drill.
How To Build An Ant Moat
I first cut the cork to where it was a bit shorter than my drill bit. Then I drilled a hole down the center of it. You want to use a bit that is slightly smaller than the wire. I then drilled a hole in the center of the cap then forced the wire through the cork. I then put glue in the moat of the cap and inserted the wire through the hole pushing it down til cork hit bottom. I set the finished product with the wire hanging down in some bottles to dry.
Very clever Xeramtheum! Thanks for posting this.
Cheers,
Wonderful!! Thanks soooo much! We still have hummers here, lots of them. Must be fattening up for their trip.
Thanks! .. Most of mine are gone .. I still have 2 hold outs .. the nights are getting into the upper 50's low 60's .. I think I'm going to take mine down this weekend.

I wanted to resurrect this because these ant moats have been so successful! Not one ant on my feeders this year .. not one! The problem is, I have a very limited supply of plastic caps with moats but plenty of everything else used to make them.
So I was hoping you'd be willing to send me your plastic caps with moats .. for every 5 you send, I'll send you 2 ant moats.
If you'd like to participate .. let me know in this thread and start saving your caps!
