How can one tell?

....Which instar(s) Gulf Frits. is/are? By experience, in order for these cats. to do well indoor. The larger, the closer to the last instar faired better being protected indoor. Is this one the 4th or 5th instar? Your advice is appreciated.

I live in south La. We are seeing Gulf Frit cats but the chrysilases disappear the day after they are formed. Therefore many fewer butterflies than usual.
Anyone else seeing this?

I've many Gulf frits. in the garden, and there are plenty more of cats on my Maypops, so I've had a good number of G.F. this year. More than last year in comparision.

Having observed these larvae, the posted pix above, could be the last instar before it will pupate. I love them b.f.

It seems like it won't be long to pupate, since you posted on the 17th it probably has by now. As for the chrysalis dissapearing, check your plants for wheelbugs, etc. Have you actually seen them in the "j" and then nothing? They usually leave the plants and go away from them to pupate.

Sheila, I hope they all went off and pupate some where? Yesterday, all those big fat cats disappear from sight! Yike.

If you looked during the day, they may have hid. Look early in the morning. But if they aren't there, I bet they did go off to pupate. Check fencing and sturdy limbed plants and yard art in the area.
