This is my pretty Polish, Whipple. She was a rescue from the Parkersburg tornado that ripped through the town of Parkersburg, Iowa, basically destroying the entire town. When she came to my place, she was missing many of her head feathers and my other girls picked on her and made her head bleed. So, I separated her and now her feathers are growing back. Today was her first evening for a bit of free ranging before bedtime. She tried really hard to make herself look big and imposing to Miss Red Rosie, but was completely ignored. Anyway, here's her first outing....
"What the....? Is it OK to go out there? I dunno....should I....shouldn't I....oh dear...."
Whipple - first day out
Somebody is saying that my front feathers look funny. I don't know what her problem is. She's asking me howcome all the feathers curve across to the right on my right side, and the left ones don't do the same thing. She's so fashion-ignorant. All the birds are doing their feathers that way this season. Geesh...
Oh gosh, she is darling! I want one of those.. she is just perfect.
what a doll! bearded and all! her nails look polished, or PO-lishes?
Love the "ready for action" pose in pic 3 too.
What a Beautiful Buff Laced polish you have there Claire if you get a roo and have some eggs we need to talk.
She isn't laying right now. I do assume it's a she.....
I think she was a baby in the tornado so she is only about 4 months old I guess. I keep hoping to find an egg in her puppy kennel (that's her temp home until her head feathers grow back properly).
Claire,
You are a saint. It is so good of you to take in all of these chickens!! She is beautiful. I hope her feathers come in nicely :) The pictures are great, but I especially love the commentary :)

Thanks Teresa! I just love them all - feathers or not! Her head feathers are actually doing much better these days. I should take an updated picture. She is getting a little bit more calm around me too. Used to be that she would just run squawking when I got near (except when she is roosting) but now she will get within about 3 or 4 feet of me, which is a huge achievement. She always roosts on top of the serama coop, and I have to pick her up after dark and take her back to her area. I always sit a while with her on the step and stroke her feathers and tell her how special she is. Maybe that is why she is getting used to me.
