Clearance, how did I do?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Pays to shop around. The "Elkridge" Lowes on 175 by 108 is huge and today had a couple racks of clearance, and most important, a clerk with the right mindset. "A dollar for anything!" They had a whole rack of small asparagus ferns for a quarter each. and purple heart. A nice enough(not dead) Weigela Wine and Roses, originally 22 $. But I don't need bushes, sadly. Loads of fibrous rooted begonias, pink.

The two Lowes near me haven't met my needs lately.

I took a nice raspberry pink chrysanthemum in basket for $2, that looks OK when you prop it up againstthe hose. A Bowles Mauve Wallflower Erysimum linifolium. A Raspberry Eyes butterfly bush. I know I shouldn't buy butterfly bush, so if it dies I won't feel bad, and if it lives, can't wait to see what Raspberry eyes looks like. And an unlabeled, maybe a pink evening primrose, as there was one pot with one flower on it that looked like a pink EP flower.
Passed up on a good caladium pot because it was the same CV as I have that did well this year. Passed on hanging white pots of petunias--hmm but for a buck you get a nice pot...and the plant for a few weeks.

Oh, Sally what a haul. Great price for Asparagus ferns. Several years ago I picked up a bunch of small ones in the Spring and tucked them in my window boxes, then at the end of summer I potted them up in large pots and gave them out at Christmas to a few friends.
I've read some good reviews on the Wine and Roses Weigela.

Sally, way to go! Maybe you should go back and get the Weigela Wine and Roses, I have one and love it.
The pink evening primrose, be careful where you plant it. it likes to wonder and take over a bed. I pulled mine out after a few years.
I like the name of the butterfly bush.

Gotta love those deals ...happy planting!

I was sorely tempted by Wine and Roses....agh
Here's a link with a pic of Raspberry Eyes color, scroll down-

I like it better then the purpel I've been looking at for a dozen years, and two of my three had bit the dust anyway. If I get to see it- this plant was kind of hurting LOL

I guess I'm still a sucker for a pink flower.

Oh, that Raspberry Eyes is a beauty....as is the Wine & Roses! I picked up a couple of the smaller Midnight Wine. I hope that flower that lovely.

Thanks for the tip, Sally, because that Lowe's in my neck of the woods. I'll definitely have to check it out! I'm a sucker for pink flowers too.

Yes Shirley ) ifgured you were near there. On Tuesday there were a couple of the pink sundrops, and of wallflower, the begonias and petunia pots- lots of pink altho standard stuff. Yun never know what else might be on the rack by now. and I didn't think to look in tropicals.
I put the sundrop in a nice tough spot to tame it, chris~~~

Way to go, Sally!! I, too, had my sights on "Wine & Roses" this year--saw it in Wayside's website recently. I was sucked in by the name alone. I want to see if I can find it locally. I have a wiegela already from Wayside that is so beautiful. It is varigated with red and white flowers in spring. Forgot the name. I will have to look at old nursery bill orders as the label got blown away.

I have 2 W&R weigelas in the front, they take a long time to get moving in the spring, every year I think they're dead & I'm tempted to rip them out, but once they finally kick in, they're lovely.

I picked up some clearance caladiums today, how do you overwinter these?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Ah- this I have a little experience with- Last fall I bought two 8-inch pots of clearance caladiums. I kept them on the deck until it got too cool and they were getting smaller. Then I brought them downstairs and let them dry out. Some time in winter I rooted around in one to look for tubers, but hardly found anything so I put that soil back . The other I left alone. This spring I started watering both. The undisturbed potcame back better than the dug up one. The dug up one did have some growth, more than I expected since I didn't think I found any signs of life. The undisturbed pot plants went into a large clay pot in the shade and has done great.

So my experience was- just let them dry out in the basement not too cold.

I left mine in their pots and just stopped watering them. A few others were dug up and put in brown paper bags. Stored them in an upstairs room that is rather warm all winter.

WOW, guess I'll have to go check my local Lowes out. I don't think hubby will complain if they are that cheap.

Don't know if you all have General Dollar stores near you, but mine had those large lite weight decorative planters on sale. In the spring I paid $10 & $7.00 each. got them for $3.00 & $2.10 each. Will put them away for Spring planting.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

that would be great- I couldn't go 7 to 10 dollars on planters (soo cheap)
