Oh, now you guys are sending stuff in code so the Canadian doesn't "get it" right? I mean, what is a white dot in a big black square supposed to mean? I must be totally dimwitted....

Leg bar....leg dot....hmmm....puzzling.....

Smile.

It's a recessive buff dilution gene attacher-thingy duh. Even I can see that!

Still looking for info on Ameraucana genetics. Don't see how we can go back any further with the original blue eggers if we can't find 'em. I think most blue egger birds are a wild variety of breeds and colors so how do we get stability and still maintain a wide enough gene pool?

(Zone 7b)

It's the full moon over my house i took about a month ago and now it's a full moon again ssssoooo thought it went with hey grow you up...............

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh wait a second....I just clicked on it....it's the MOON!!! She's mooning me!!! LOL! No, I get it now, it goes with the "You up?" question. I get it, because it's late.

Oh boy, I need a coffee!

That is a really beautiful photograph of the moon though - you are such an excellent photographer Harmony. All your pictures are so clear and well composed.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oops, cross posted! I'm sorry Harmony, I'm just slow tonight. And I didn't click on it to enlarge initially. :-(

Can't blame me - I'm sitting here reading contract law and looking for excuses not to...

(Zone 7b)

The one i saw this past saturday would have passed for his twin and the guy told me it was a crelle mixed with ?? I'm gonna try this one day soon as i get my porcelains going i'll try it.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I wonder if there are wild breeds of chickens in Mexico that lay blue eggs, and whether you might be able to import them from there more easily...?

Clarkson, KY

It IS a beautiful pic -which I would've said had I not been smartin off about genes.

I would LOVE to find a dependable blue egg breed -only a simple color scheme to work with...

Lodi, United States

I think the original ones were from South America--but there is one called the Persian or Manx rumpless, purportedly unrelated to the SA ones, that also sometimes lays blue eggs.

If you have the Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds they have a nice description of the complex origin of the Araucana. Its on pages 4 and 5.

(Zone 7b)

Okay from what i know which ain't ner a nuff ops sorry for the southern drawl. From what i know about americana's they are i don't think related to the original araucana [think i spelled it right] and they were genetically created but how in the cat hair could that be. if ameriacana's and araucanas both lay colored eggs wouldn't they have to be some kinda kin. well dad burnit i know we can figure this out i'll due a little research tommarow and will be back on hear fast as a jack rabbit with what i got if you come up with for i do just post it and i'll come a runnin.
Hey cats got me a thinkin bout chocolate think theres some nice healthy YOGURT in the frig.

Lodi, United States

Oh--the Ameraucanas are supposed to be related to the Araucanas--sort of a correction for the lethal tailess gene. It is the Easter Eggers that may only have the Araucana's gene for blue eggs. If you backcross to unrelated birds often enough, only selecting for egg color, you can get rid of most of the Araucana's genes and still have a blue or green egg layer.

I'm still curious about the relationship between the Persian Rumpless and the Araucanas. There is a school of thought that the Araucanas are more closely related to Asian birds than Europeans.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh! Sandhill Preservation sells Manx Rumpless...

Mmmmmm...chocolate....

Storey's Illustrated Guide says that the Ameraucana began to be developed in the 1930s with araucana parent stock imported from South America, but that the modern breed was developed in the 1970s. They say it was to standardize a blue egg layer without the lethal allele trait of the Araucana.

It also says that the Araucana was developed in Chile by a professor of animal science from birds kept by the Mapuche native Chilean tribe - the Collonca and the Quetero.

Lodi, United States

Yeh, and the small, single-combed, tailess Collonca "laid intensely blue eggs" while the Quetero, with its flowing tail, pea comb and tufts at ears, laid brown ones.

One of us needs to go down to Chile, hack our way through the jungle, and get our hands on a pair of Collonca.

I nominate the Canadian!

Liking the pics -And the blue egger talk.

Cats, didn't you say you were going to Chile in the spring?

What if everyone who has an Ameraucana roo breeds it to a Barred Rock and then we comp chickies? Pick the creamiest colors, should be roughly sex-linked.

I and a few compadres who have no Ameraucanas get a Leghorn roo to cross with a couple Barred Rocks? Pick the creamiest colors, should be roughly sex-linked.

Cross ABR hen w/ Leghorn roo
Cross LBR hen w/ Ameraucana roo

I can't think it out any further.
Maintain sufficient BR hen to keep sex-link w/out sacrificing blue egg to brown.(green)

(Zone 7b)

Huh?? I was going to bed and you wrote all that.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awww...Tessie Wes is adorable. So is the frog. You can keep the spider, although I will admire it from a distance. I love the ones that make big webs above my doors and stop the bugs coming in. I duck underneath them.

I would totally love to go to the Chilean jungle and find some chickens. I think that would be such fun. Sounds like one of those "Earthwatch" expeditions. I have always wanted to do that. One of these days....

I work with law firms in Chile. Maybe they could find out about the importation requirements.

Plus after I get them, I can sit back and enjoy a nice Chilean wine. ;-)

Clarkson, KY

You're hired! How much Brazilian chocolate do you want? (Sounds better than Kentucky chocolate, right?)

Lodi, United States

The Chileans are pretty easy to work with.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i want the wine, yall can have the chickens!

love those pics HP, esp the moon. we have a lovely full one here tongiht.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This is really interesting to me. I bought 7 chicks sold as Aracauna. After reading more.. I'm thinking they are Ameraucanas, as some of them appear to have muffs or beards.. and they have tails. I guess they will have to get a little older to know for sure. Either way, they are blue eggers and I love them. :)

I was reading on Wikipedia about them..

The ancestors of the modern Araucana chicken were purportedly first bred by the Araucanians Indians of Chile -- hence the name "Araucana." The Araucana as we know it today is a hybrid of two South American breeds: the Collonca (a naturally blue-egg laying, rumpless, clean-faced chicken) and the Quetros (a pinkish-brown egg layer that is tailed and has ear-tufts).

Lodi, United States

Hi ZZ. If Robinson is still using Privett Hatcheries (and I am sure they are) then you probably did get an Ameraucana. Pure Araucanas are harder to find cause of the lethal gene.

Someone stop me from going to Robinson's tomorrow. I actually do need to go there for crimped oats.........

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I got all the good ones, you can go safely.. LOL There are no more that "flipped" as pullets, THAT I can tell you for sure! LOL

I've gotta get a pic of what I built for in the house.. it's a PVC tractor that fits over a plastic "under the bed" tote... I filled it with shavings.. and since I used wire, I can hang a light if needed. I put a door on it so I can reach in.... spray painted it green.. I love it! I'll get a pic tomorrow..

(Zone 7b)

ZZ mentioned the chick flipping has anybody got a chick yet confirmed as the sex it flipped??

[somehow this statement seemed a little crazy after i saw it in print]

Clarkson, KY

Aww, Cats -you can do the roo-barred rock thingy. Just one pleeeease? I have no ideawhere to go for Ameraucanas here in rurl Kaintuck.

(Zone 7b)

Grow do you have livestock auctions there that also sell chickens?? We got alot of them here and they were at least 20 at the one i was at sat.

Clarkson, KY

Almost every last one is for bulk hatchery layers. And I don't know much about the hatcheries except they order from elsewhere...:(

(Zone 7b)

We have a state bulletin that has poultry in it it's for people like me who sell chickens have you looked into if there is one there? Do you have a small town paper you could advertise a wanted ad for americanas.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Oooo! Can't wait for the pic. With your permission, I may borrow your idea! Yes, the CF has sprinkled her dust onto my DH! HeeHee!

(Zone 7b)

Yes please borrow and post your results.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

My chicks are too young to tell yet. I suppose it'll be a few weeks yet before I can tell if the flip results are accurate on mine. A few of them were undecided about their genders!

Clarkson, KY

Still searching. Found one nearby poultry fair...
