Pink Grit vs. Blue Grit.....thoughts please?

San Bruno, CA

My local feed store sells grit in bulk. The pink grit says "pigeon grit" while the blue grit says "bird grit." I bought my girls a special bag of chick grit (which was pink) when they were little, and the time has come to upgrade. Since they are not pigeons, I got the blue stuff, but they don't touch it. Should I get the pink stuff? Anyone know why it is colored? The color washes off in water.

I use the pink Grit for my pigeons and doves and it susposed to have minerals in it for these type birds i will look into the ingrediants because mine comes in a plain brown bag.
Ive never seen or heard of the blue kind.

It may be size related--or it may have to do with the amount of Ca or other minerals added. The feed store should know. It can be very hard to get grit with out Ca--which is what you are suppose to use for young chicks. Our local "Parrot" store sells different colored grit with different formulas and has plain grit too.

I thought about asking at the feed store, but I question their judgement. When I asked them about feed for pullets the owner told me that after 6 weeks they are done chick feed. Then you move on to chick scratch until it is time for layer. Chick scratch for 4-5 months? Seems unlikely. I'll look for other grit options.
Thanks!

Oh! My feed store only has what they call chicken grit in bags, and it is crushed granite, and it's kind of whitish with black bits in it. I didn't know there were different kinds of grit. Now I am wondering...

Claire the pink grit is for pigeons i don't know if it would be suitable for chicks since it's for pigeons. I can't find the ingrediants i'm still lookin.

Okie-dokie, I feel like I'm using the right stuff then. I did buy grit for the baby chicks that is parrot grit and it's more like sand. I read that I could use that in one of my books. I hope that is OK.
