High humidity and many rainy days over the past couple of weeks seem to have caused a growth spurt in many of my plants. My Hoya has many new young baby pinkish leaves, the cerious cactus has new pinkish growth around the edges with little tiny leaves, and the most exciting thing....I have my first ever ginger root growth today! A few weeks ago I planted a couple very small pieces of Ginger root and this morning I found a new (the very 1st) leaf popped up out of the dirt.
It is a great day. Apparently my green thumb has sprouted again!
Will a period of really high humidity cause a growth spurt?
I think they react to weather changes....
Birdie: Sounds like your plants are very happy with this humid summer weather! As long as they don't get their roots too wet and soggy, which causes root rot I think you will continue to see happy plants until the cooler weather gets here and growth begins to slow down.
I hang most of my hoyas outdoors in my apple trees during the summer, and it seems that all of the tropicals, hoyas included, put out new luxurious growth after the hot & humid periods.
That's the main reason I take them out...the rain does a lot for them, too...washing off the accumulated dust from the winter.
Hoyas, generally, come from VERY humid areas...they feel at home.
So very cool.!
I am really seeking validation of what I have observed in this plant over the years. and to understand it more.
Yes, each summer outdoors in the well lit, but not direct sun and flourishing during the late summer rains. If I remember, soon after will come the many blooms.(Hope so , anyway!)
I really really want some more type of Hoya. Now that I know what this plant is that I have had and loved (apparently well, too!) for 5-8 years.
How can I find more. Is there anyone out there who might sent some cuttings of a few, or even one. I do not have much to offer, I fear, but will most graciously pay postage
We periodically have swaps and round robins. Ebay is good to find them...many at a good price. You can also check out the vendors in Garden Watchdog....
I cannot even look at garden catalogues except as references . Trying to live on a disability income does not afford the luxuries of making catalogue purchases.
Probable 90% of my plants have come from the wilted broken off pieces that I may find on the ground in garden centers. I always ask and have never been told "no, you may not have that dead looking wilted piece of plant."
I will look forward to a DG exchange, 'cept, with me only having H carnosa and H compacta, I can't imagine anyone trading for a cutting of them.
If anybody has a plant that they would be willing to share a small piece of I will gladly pay the postage; and be very grateful
As a beginner again (starting my house plants over after surviving a house fire), this is the best I can do.
