I am thrilled, epiphyllum oxypetalum blooming tonight!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I have had this plant since 1998. Tonight she finally put on a show for me and a few friends. :) I am including a link to a movie file I made, it's a four megabyte download movie I put together with Windows Movie Maker, that shows the bloom progress over a period of about forty five minutes. http://www.lachesys.com/wmv/epi.oxi.bloom.wmv . Hopefully it will work.

This flower is breathtaking. Chantall, it smells like bug spray. :P

It's just breath-taking!

This flower is the easiest subject. I am not that good of a photographer. This is that good of a flower. And Chantall, from a distance it is an enchanting fragrance. :)

WOW!!

The flower is 8" across.

The throat is probably about three inches deep.

It is absolutely enchanting.

You are right, it does smell like bugspray and you'll never tired of seeing them bloom, even if it's just for a night. It's so BIG!

I think my pot is too crowded this year. No bud, but here it is last year.

Joe nice show you presented, here is mine that just stopped blooming, although she has more buds forming, hopefully they will not fall. Isn't this an amazing plant?

this pix is two days after she bloomed! i figure to give the audience a different look from your gorgeous one that was opened

Clemen,

It is thrilling to watch it open. You really CAN see it moving. It's rare to see a plant move so quickly. The white is so pure, and the petals are translucent. The flower is as beautiful as the plant itself is unattractive (to me.) By my eye the plant is an alien beast, but the blooms are simply stunning.

Lili,

I guess once they bloom the first time they pretty much go over the hump. From now on I am hopeful I can expect a blooming "flush". I can't even imagine what it must be like. :)

Pamela,

It was amazing. I had friends visiting that evening, not plant people, but even they were impressed. The next day my garden was severly damaged by Ike's leftovers (70+ mph winds and small tornados), so my epi flowered just in the nick of time. :)

Kyle,

Thank you. I have four pictures I want to frame as a montage. It's a huge flower anyways, which helps. It really photographed well. :)

My DH call the plant the "little shop of horror" plant because he could not believe the size of the bloom. Check out the bud right the day before it opened. When you can see the white stuff, it's going to bloom that night - just one night and it's gone....
