Amaryllis flowers in time for Christmas?

San Antonio, TX

I got an amaryllis last year just in time for Christmas blooming, and I would like to have blooms again this Chistmas. When do you think I should put the plant in a cool, dark place (i.e., the refrigerator) in time for flowers for Christmas?

I'd say early October but I may be wrong, since I usually bloom mine for after Xmas.

I don't think you're ever supposed to put amaryllis in the refrigerator, since they're tropical. To get blooms at a particular time, I think you need to force dormancy (dig up the bulb or maybe just let it go dry). I wrote up some introductory information in this DG article, http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/468/, and you might also get some good advice on the amaryllis forum. HTH!

Wow I missed the refrigerator part. I was thinking basement. I just cut the leaves and I don't water for a few months. Some folks change the soil but I use a houseplant fertilizer in my water when I start up again.

Amaryllis coop going on right now in the Coop forum. Closes for ordering tomorrow, 9/21.
