Gail, are you OK?

I think one member of the AV gang lives in Corpus Christi. i don't remember who. Does anyone know if she is OK?

My best wishes to any of you living in TX.

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail lives just north of Corpus Christi.......but I thought Ike was going onshore in the Galveston/Houston area. Hundreds of thousands of people are in it's path......has anyone heard is it a Cat 3 or 4?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

This is why I'm checking in...thanks for posting it spider....as I'm worried about Gail, too!

She posted this morning at 6:33 on the MarketPlace forum. I corresponded with her yesterday, and Gail says she's ready, but Ike had better leave her alone!

Last I heard Ike was a 3....hoping it loses strength or diverts or something...anything!

I am in Corpus Christi. Yes, it looks like we got lucky. The "front" came from the north and that helped. The storm it going a few hours north of us. Will be cat 2 or 3. They think it will be smaller than they thought at first. The surge is a problem though.

thank you for posting Sally. It's great to know that you are OK.:o)

Praying you'll be safe, too, Sally!
Thanks for posting.

Here's the latest Satellite Image of humongous hurricane Ike spinning towards Texas: http://hurricane.accuweather.com/hurricane/satellite.asp?region=hatl&anim=1&type=ei&basin=atlantic

News reports say it's almost 600 miles wide!

My thoughts and prayers remain with everyone in it's path. Hope everyone stays safe.

Last I heard from Gail, her brother boarded up her house and she has friends staying with her. I think she will be okay if they can tie her down to keep her from going out to look at the storm, LOL. I'm just kidding. Even though I know Gail loves storms and thinks they are exciting, she is a smart lady and will stay safe!

Yes, now the news says we will get very little wind or rain. Hope that is right. Just the Houston area.

Galveston is the biggest worry. The whole island may be under water soon. The people there sure better be out of there soon. They are already rescuing people but soon, it will be too late.

There are 22 people on a freighter ship in the Gulf that cannot be rescued. They have no power, they have to ride it out. They are from Cyprus.

I caught just a bit of the noon news and heard about that freighter in the gulf and that they could not be rescued. It was amazing video of how the surf was on the beach! The gulf of mexico is usually so calm and those waves looked like the Atlantic or Pacific with the huge waves! Storm surge is sure going to be a major problem in the low lying areas ... that's the problem we have here in Florida from canes' too. There are still some areas of flooding here from Tropical Storm Fay!

I am wondering how Key West fared after "Ike" blew past there ... I saw video a few days ago where the ocean was coming up into the roads .. if a cat 3 or 4 hurricane ever hit key west head on I'm afraid there'd be nothing left ... they are right at sea level or just a little above!

Gail posted (somewhere) about 9:00am this morning . . . she was going back to bed, since she got up so early this morning . . .

Just keep everyone in the Galveston and Houston area (over 11 million people are in the path of Ike).........in your prayers. We aren't getting anything but maybe 50 mph winds tomorrow............but their will be at least a 23 wall of water ..........it is not the wind force but the 250 mph across the eye and the storm surge that is going to kill people. I just feel so sad about it. I wish we had gotten it where it is so sparsely populated. Corpus area doesn't have many people to evacuate. I have already put my plants back outside .........that is why I am tired this afternoon.

Although we feel blessed, I just keep thinking about Houston , (all of Harris County), Galveston and all of Brazoria county.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just for comparison, Katrina had the horrible winds and the horrible wall of water and it dumped a wall of 17 inches into the Pontchetrain River. They aren't predicting the winds of Katrina but the wall of water is already projected to be 23 feet...........just a disaster of momentous proportions.

Don't know what that link was for ... it says it has been flagged for removal. Must not have been appropriate.

The one above? It just says Hurricane for sale.

When I click on that link it says: This posting has been flagged for removal. Nothing else.

Yes, it wasn't appropriate I suppose since it was a posting in the Craigs free section. But it is nice to see humor in all things.

The craigs ad: Free hurricane (houston area )

Ike is a deadly storm and there will definitely be destruction, I wonder if the person who posted it lives in the Houston area?

When we had all the bad hurricanes in 2004 here in Florida we were seeing things on the news with houses boarded up where people had painted signs on the boards, like Go away Frances etc. I remember someone keeping a list on the side of their house, really huge letters with each storms name and date! That year we had Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne ... and I think there was another one too.

Our news stations have been giving updates on Hurricane Ike and they are now predicting landfall late tonight/early a.m. - already have such huge waves, I know storm surge is going to be devastating. I sure hope everyone is safe.

I have one friend on the island who did NOT make it out on time or choose to stay with her friend there who thinks he is invincible. Her daughter works with my twin sis at the hospital here where we both work (we are all RNs but they work on the same floor, me in ED) and I guess when she saw my sis at work today just burst out crying and held onto her for the longest time. Don't know what people are thinking or if they just choose not to listen to the warnings. She's a sweet person who went back down there after a new marriage up here went bad on Day 4, then she went back down there to get away and her old boyfriend/ex-Navy Seal, who has remained just a good friend to her, took her back into his home, lovingly, so her ex won't bother her there, but...please pray for them tonight.
Thanks,
Laura

plantladylin, that is a neat idea, marking your boards to mark the storms you've weathered.
