Pigeon Question Answered

(Zone 7b)

I have been ask this question over and over and here is the answer. The question is..How come you never see a baby pigeon? The answer is pigeons are very private birds and build thier nest in very high secluded places bridges, eaves of buildings they build a very thin flat nest of twigs and feathers they both sit on the 2 eggs and share in the raiseing of the young. The young stay with the nest until they are almost adult size then test thier wings and eventually leave the nest and go with mom and dad to learn to feed themselves. If you see a flock of pigeons feeding and notice a pigeon appear to be trembling and appearing to harrass another pigeon till it feeds it you are looking at a male feeding his kids. And that is why you never see a baby pigeon.

Pigeons also grow really fast like seagulls, so you don't realise they are babies. I always thought it was funny to watch them feeding babies that were nearly as big as they. I miss my pigeons. I had a large flock of whites and a roller for years.

They do grow fast and i remove the older chicks when i know they are feeding themselves because they harass the adult birds for food even when as you said almost as big as the parents.
Why not get a pair hope thats not pushy they are such good pets and the owls are very people friendly and sweet birds and arn't as flighty as the tumbler roller type birds.

I've been thinking about a pair again. I have my chicken run set up now so a pigeon could come and go when it's open. My first flock was loose and nested in boxes I put under the eaves. They were so pretty flying around and cars used to stop to watch them bathe in my waterfall. It looked like disneyland. Then an owl cleaned me out in just a couple of days. I only had a pair of rock doves left and that was because I could catch them.
