Epiitis strikes again

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Would some one please stop me!!!!! I really have a bad case of epiitis.

I bought some more. What am I going to do when my 100+ epi cuttings git full size. Oh well I guess I better get buzy and change my plans for my shade/greenhouse.

Still having problems with those squirrels and my labels. The only good thing is I have more plants now becouse of the broken off pieces. But now they are attacking my christmas cactus cuttings.
Guess I better keep the bird feeders full all the time.

Oh my Wren ... that is Gorgeous! Sounds like you are going to need to invest in a Greenhouse before long! That is a lot of Epi's ... but oh, how lovely it would be to have over a hundred of those beauties all blooming at the same time!

I found about 6 more buds on my E. hookeri again a few days ago ... watching and waiting! This time I taped a note to the kitchen cabinet to remind me to get the flashlight and go out into the backyard and check on it every single night! I can't believe I've had that darned plant for for 30 years and have never seen the blooms until they are wilted and just about dead!

I think I get about all I want except I would like a few more yellows. Some of mine should bloom next year. But most where bought this year so will not be big enough to bloom for another year or so. But I might have some cuttings to give away next year. I will let you know. Just bought some tie on labels, more than one way to beat those pesty squirrels. i just have to find the time and energy to relabel them all.

Good luck on the flowers.

Squirrels sure are pesky critters! I have lost a few orchids that were hanging in a tree in the backyard ... found more moss and 2 empty baskets, no sign of the orchids anywhere on the ground. The squirrels are always running all over that tree. I wonder if Mrs. Squirrel is taking my orchids to decorate her nest. ^_^

I just got the recent issue of Birds & Blooms Magazine in the mail yesterday and there was a cute story in there from a lady in New York who told about her husband who is a veteran and loves the American Flag. She said he displays 12 flags around their deck railing. When they returned from vacation one year all the flags were gone. He replaced them and thought nothing of it and then a week or so later they all disappeared again. He called the police and they said they would patrol the area and keep an eye out. One day while her husband was mowing the lawn an American Flag floated down from a tree! Up in a large maple tree was a huge squirrel's nest made of sticks, leaves ... and American Flags! She said her husband was too embarrassed to call the police and tell them he had found the culprit!

Isn't that story a hoot? I guess there are patriotic squirrels as well as those who like to possibly decorate their nest with plants!

I love it.

I thought it was great too! And, I think I will be watching and looking up in the trees at the squirrel nests, to see if I happen to notice any orchid's blooming!

Some orchids are eatable so may be they are eating them. I fenced in my christmas cactus cuttings so maybe they will keep out of them. They do not chew on them, just knock them over. They have not messed with the ones that I put out into my makeshift shade house.

Oh, I never thought about them eating the orchids! I think I am going out right now and remove the ones that are left hanging in that tree ... I am NOT serving orchids for dinner anymore! ^_^

Hi Wren,

Where do you order your epi cuttings/plants from? I have several cuttings that were given to me by a dear friend in CA. Some day they will be full grown and blooming like crazy(I hope!).

Sorry about the furry tailed rats wreaking havoc on your cacti. They have ripped one of my noid cc to shreds. I'm upset, but not quite as upset as I would have been had it been one of my named cc!!! They just dig up the dirt in all the pots. What are they doing? looking for peanuts or trying to hide some? Arrrgggh, I hate squirrels.

Hi Shanika The main place I get epis from is www.gotepis.com.cart I believe that he is in Calif. The cuttings are great The only problem with this place is you have to get there fast to get cutting before they sell out. I check 2-3 times a month. The mother's day sale is supper.
If I have problems Jim will answer e-mails with helpful info.
He also has seeds.

The other place is www.episgalleria.com/ Also good cuttings. A larger supplies.

Those furry tailed tree rats are a pain in the ______!!!!!
As it gets cooler my dog will chase them more. And I am trying to keep the bird feeders full so they do not go searching for food on the carport. At lease most of my cuttings and plants are in my shade house and they leave them alone there.
