Well, tonight I tried Harmony's chick flipping method and got the following results. I will repeat in a week or so and see if it is consistent.
Harmony - please take a look and see if you agree with my guesses!
Here are chicks 1, 2 and 3. I put head shots with the flip shots to show head spots for correlation.
Chick 1 did both responses on 2 different flips.
Harmony's chick flipping method
i always love your pics...
i di d alittle flipping myself, even though mine may be too old. 5 weeks tomorrow?
plan to flip more seriously in the AM
I am just dreading the possibility of 7 roos. 4 and 5 look pretty clearly pullet-like, with definite single-leg action.
Thanks TF - I don't know if 5 weeks is too old or not. I thought I'd try it tomorrow with my 8-9 weekers, just to see if it would work, since I already have some guesses based on combs, etc.
Let us know the results of your new "serious" morning flipping!
yeppers.
i would like a frontal view of #6. still not sure about him LOL
Chick 1 Roo because of strait out legs on first attempt>>>>Chick 2 Roo>>> Chick 3 pullet because her right leg is extended farther out than her left.
Chicks 4/5/6>>>Pullet/Pullet/Roo
Chicks 7/8/9>>>Roo/Roo/Pullet
5 Roos 4 Pullets and thats my results *Harmony*
I was taught on chicks less than 1 week old don't know about older can't remember if i trie it on older it's been awhile {Not that i forgot how to do it this is the correct way}
Well shoot, that's way too many roos for my taste! Guess a lot of them are gonna be dinner. I might keep the light coloured one though (chick #1) because it's one of my favorites and he might be a stunner.
Chick 5 is my big fave. Yay, pullet!!
These are basically 7 to 9 days old, so about 1 week.
I love these pics.. I did mine and didn't keep track.. It was so cute to see them relax and stick a leg out.. just tooo cute!
WOnderful pics, but could you explain one more time, what irt is exactly you are looking at/for when you flip them. I understand this is a gp rated forum.. but....
Fran - Harmony said that she learned from someone who was a long time chicken farmer that when you flip a chick on its back, and it relaxes after a few seconds, it will either stick one leg out (often the right leg) or both legs out. If they stick one leg out (and keep the other flexed in to their body) it's a pullet. If they stick both legs out, it's a roo. I was trying that method. They do relax quite quickly and generally do stick out either 1 or 2 legs. For example, on my second photo set, compare chicks 5 and 6. 1 leg out vs. 2 legs out. Try it on some of your own - apparently they need to be quite young for it to work though. I will see how the results go as these chicks get older and develop other characteristics. She said it's about 90% accurate.
Now, I know about cow tipping, but flipping chicks?
We should get T-shirts made. I have a cow tipping team t-shirt.
It's fun! LOL Really, they just get upset for a second... then relax.. It's so cute!
so are they different enough that you can tell them apart from now on.. I had some that I would have had to mark, and did many different ways. But now I would put a zip tie on.. and maybe record my suspicions.
Oh i want a Tangerine elephant one thats says i love my elephant on it. ELLIE is excited that fran took a picture of her and the neighbors Elephant together. TEE HEE how do you think i got mine!!
You know, it would be a lot safer that the cows. We convinced a kid in high school to tip the neighbors bull. I didn't know anyone could move so fast. I think I'll email him about the chickens and see if he's forgiven me yet. It's been 35 years, how mad could he be?
I wish I had chicks to try this with, all I've got right now are two squirrels and a turtle and they won't co operate.
we will wear our tye dye shirts that say Fritch Texas. i told the store manager, since there is no other Fritch in the whole USA, he could drop the Texas part...
i bought lots of them. was going to have them monogrammed with my business name, but then it was going to be too expensive [the shirts are genuine, so not cheap to begin with].
i think you could flip- a turlte?
Flipping turtles and squirrels i think somebody needs to call the Game Warden.
I Dare you to flip my Elephant!
tf, you could find a friend with an embroidery sewing machine.. maybe trade her a goat for the work... hmm like the barter system..
wish I knew someone like that.. had a machine and needed/wanted another goat..
Fran How do you get the picture on here without the words on it ??????
my info, manage pref, on right hand side click copyrights button and make a choice.
Sorry kinda doubled up on my post on two threads didn't know which one to put it on.
Fran - there are four chicks that I can keep track of without question - the other 5 are tricky. I have chick leg bandettes coming this week. I took the head shots partially for the head spots to correlate with roo-ness, but also because that way I should be able to put the leg bands on and keep the original results for each chick. If I had only taken pix of their undersides, I would not be able to tell! I also bought a new filing box and files so that I can keep a record of chicks. I'm trying to get organized! (it's a bad habit I have!)
The light colored one is the only one that color. The second light-ish colored one with an orange head is the only one that color. Then, the two smallest black ones are easy because one has sticky-out wings and the other is the other smaller one. They are smaller than all the others. The other 5 are all black with/without head spots and all around the same size. Groan.
Hey claire since everybody was asking age limit on the chick sexing i did a little detective work myself the pic you are seeing is my cochins. I have a chalk board that i keep info on and i had erased the date of thier hatch. But believe them to be 3 to 3 an a half months old and as you can see it's really apparent whats Roo/Hen. I did 3 roos all stuck out both legs repeated with 3 hens and they all stuck out the right leg so yes people it does work. i took the pic about an hour ago and these are bantams not standard.
Excellent detective work Harmony!! I tried it with 3 of my (roughly) 8 week olds and they all kept both legs pulled in so I had no clue.
Great pic, by the way!
I will no longer be posting on this thread
god look wat happens when i leave for 5 minutes every one is fighting
why wont any one think of the chickens LOL
