Our tame RIR roo that never pecked any of us and was such a spoiled boy is gone. He was such a sweet roo. We called him Splits because when he was little he had splat leg and we picked him up everytime he fell and he finally recovered and was walking well.
He was over a year old now and the other day we noticed he was having trouble staying up like he hurt his leg again. He tried hard though to stay up and get up when he fell. We felt all over his leg and thigh but couldn't find any spot that felt out or anything. This evening when we came home we checked the chickens and locked them up. My son was worried about Splits so he went looking for him with a flashlight. He wasn't in the chicken house so he started looking in the yard. He found him in the water bucket drowned. It was not easy to go out there and pull him out.
My daughter was so upset. It is never easy to loose a beloved chicken. My son took it better than I thought he would. He sqid he had the feeling something would happen to him and that he wouldn't recover.
Tomorrow we will take the walk down the trail again to the chicken graveyard. A place I hoped I wouldn't have to go back to to bury a chicken for a long time.
We lost Splits today.
OH NO! That is so sad, I am getting teary eyed just thinking about it. What a shame - he sounds like he was a great roo. I hope that he fathered some other baby roos to come along. I am so sorry for you and your kids. Best wishes on your walk of memories tomorrow.
Wow, I'm terribly sorry Smedge : ( Sending peace and light your way......
what a lovely guy he was. sending good thoughts to your family, and to the other chickens as well.
Thanks for the kind thoughts.
smedgekles, My deepest condolences for the loss of Splits. As you know, MANY chickens are lost each day. None, though, with a life like Splits. Every moment he lived with you he was watched over and cared for like no other chicken could ever dream to be. Everytime you "walk down the trail", remember how much enjoyment the birds you have lost brought you, and what health and vitality you gave them before they breathed their last breath. The Chicken Fairy never forgets the kindness one shows to their flock.

smedgekles I didn't see this thread yesterday. I am so sorry for your loss. It's always the good ones that seem to leave us first.

Sorry for your loss Smedgekles. He sounds like he was a wonderful roo.
Thanks everyone. Your kind words are appreciated.
It is always the good ones that leave first isn't it MollyD. My kids mentioned that as well. Seems like it is always the ones that are the most tame and best pets.
Hope we don't loose anymore anytime soon.
Now we need to secure all the chickens now. The storm in the gulf could give us lots of rain and 45 to 75mph winds if it continues on its current course and strengthens to what they are expecting. Sure hope it weakens and sure hope it doesn't decide to hit our area straight on. Don't want my chickens washed or blown away.
Here's hoping you all pull through this next storm safely smedgekles.
MollyD
